Emmitsburg, Md. - Junior Drew Slocum placed third in singles and helped his doubles team to a runner-up finish, leading the Millersville men's tennis team at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational this weekend.
The two-day event included players from Gettysburg, Loyola, Mount St. Mary's and Millersville, and there were two doubles flights and four singles flights with eight players in each double-elimination bracket.
Slocum, playing in the A Flight, won his first match over Loyola's Pierce Norton, 6-2, 6-3. He won the first set of his second round match 6-1, but Patrick Plastow of Mount St. Mary's edged him 7-6 in the second and 10-7 in the super tiebreaker to advance. Slocum, however, won his third-place match.
Millersville's highest placewinner was Erik Wright, who took second in the C Flight. In the B Flight, Tyler Reppert and Henry Ben each split their first two matches and collided in the third-place match. Ben bowed out, giving Reppert third and Ben fourth. Marty O'Hora grabbed fourth in D Flight, as well.
In doubles action, Slocum and Sorgi, fresh off a semifinal appearance at the ITA Atlantic Regional, worked their way to the A Flight championship match after defeating a pair of teams from Loyola in the first two rounds. They were nipped 8-6 in the title tilt by Mount St. Mary's top team, though.
Reppert and Wright, also playing in the A Flight, won one match and finished sixth. Colton Brown and O'Hora also won one match and finished sixth in the B Flight.
Millersville hosts Delaware State on Oct. 9. The dual is scheduled for 3 p.m.
