Millersville

Matt Sutjak

Matt Sutjak

Matt Sutjak has elevated Millersville's defense into one of the top units in the PSAC. As the team's defensive coordinator since 2016, Sutjak has built up a unit that consistently performs among the PSAC's best.

For the eight seasons prior to Sutjak's appointment, the Millersville defense ranked no better than 14th in the PSAC in scoring defense. Sutjak's first season saw the Marauders jump to 10th and they ranked ninth in 2017. More impressively, Sutjak's defense ranked No. 6 in the PSAC in total defense in 2017--its highest ranking in more than 19 years. In 2018, the defense led the PSAC in pass defense.

In each of the last five seasons, Sutjak's defense placed two or more players on the All-PSAC East teams--the most in a decade. He has coached 15 All-PSAC East selections in his time as the team's defensive coordinator. In 2022, Tyler Tate because Millersville's first defensive lineman since 1994 to be a two-time All-PSAC East selection, and linebacker Isaiah Onuschak earned his third-straight honor--the first Marauder to accomplish that feat since 2007. In 2023, Garrett Cox became Millersville's first All-American since 2000.

In leading Millersville to its most wins since 2007, the Marauders' 2022 defense held opponents to 20 points or fewer seven times and surrendered just 13.4 points per game in the team's wins.

When he arrived back at his alma mater in 2013, Sutjak coached the outside linebackers and spent two seasons with the defensive line. Sutjak's group helped the Marauders boost their sack total by 10 in 2015 and the defense posted its best total defense ranking in the PSAC in 15 seasons. In his first season as the defensive coordinator, two of his players were named All-PSAC East, and linebacker Sean Dugan recorded the most tackles by a Marauder in 17 years.

Sutjak quickly progressed through the coaching ranks after his 2010 graduation from Millersville. He spent the 2012 season as the tight ends coach at the University of Rhode Island, which competes at the Division I FCS level. In addition to coaching the tight ends, he assisted in writing practice scripts, film breakdown, and recruiting. Following the season, he added assistant special teams coordinator to his list of responsibilities.

Prior to his tenure Rhode Island, Sutjak coached the secondary at Division III Lycoming College. Sutjak helped the defense ranked third nationally in total defense, second nationally in pass efficiency defense and first in the MAC in total defense. Three of his defensive backs were named all-conference and free safety Ray Bierbach was named All-America.

Sutjak, who graduated with a 3.15 GPA in social studies education, was regarded as highly intelligent player from his free safety position. After transferring from Central Connecticut State, Sutjak played in 33 consecutive games, totaling 239 tackles. He led the team in tackles in 2008 and 2009. He tied for the PSAC lead in interceptions with five during the 2010 season.
