WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Millersville University women's volleyball team's defense held West Chester University to a season-low .172 hitting percentage, but the effort wasn't enough as the Golden Rams pulled away for a 3-0 sweep. Set scores were 26-24, 25-19, and 25-23.

Amanda Protzman and Marissa Storti led the offensive attack with seven kills apiece, while Sidonia Cecco added three service aces. Hailey Lazur recorded a season-high six blocks at the net, and Becca Hartranft anchored the back row with nine digs.

Play went back and forth early in the opening set until a kill from Nadia Sawyer gave Millersville a one-point advantage. The Marauders extended their lead slightly, but West Chester capitalized on several Millersville errors to even the score at 9-9. The teams continued to trade points before the Golden Rams established a three-point lead. Trailing 21-18, Millersville battled back to tie the set behind a kill from Charlee Russick and back-to-back blocks from Protzman. Russick then put the Marauders ahead 24-23 with another kill, but West Chester answered with three consecutive points to close out the set, 26-24.

The West Chester offense found its rhythm early in the second set, jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead. Sawyer and Storti answered with back-to-back kills, while a big block from Protzman and Sawyer evened the score at 4-4. The Golden Rams quickly regained control, stringing together a 7-1 run to build a six-point advantage. The Marauders continued to chip away with single points before Cecco stepped to the service line and delivered three consecutive aces, bringing Millersville within two. The momentum was short-lived, however, as West Chester closed out the set on a 5-1 run to take a 2-0 lead.

Millersville never lost its fight as points continued to be traded in the third set. West Chester found some momentum with a 4-0 run, but kills from Protzman and Storti brought the Marauders back within two. The Golden Rams continued to pull ahead, but Millersville responded with a 5-0 run after trailing 18-13 to tie the set. Back-to-back blocks from Sawyer and Lazur then gave the Marauders a one-point lead. West Chester answered with a 4-1 scoring run to close out the set and take the match.

"I'm very pleased with the progress of the team at the net defensively," said head coach Brian Smith. "Our blocking has improved. We have bigger players. They're doing a much better job which makes it more difficult on the opponents offense to score. It's also helping us play better back row defense. I thought the team played extremely well today. Definitely seeing some improvement very quickly and so I look forward to our next match."

The Marauders are back on their home court on Monday, Sept 21 when they face Felician University.
