Volleyball splits day two matches at PSAC East Kick-Off Tournament

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Millersville University women's volleyball team went 1-1 on day two of the PSAC East Kick-Off Tournament, earning a four-set victory over Caldwell University before falling to West Virginia State University in four sets. Millersville defeated Caldwell by set scores of 29-27, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-15 before dropping its second match to West Virginia State, 25-16, 25-19, 26-24 and 25-20.
Match One vs Caldwell
The Marauders' offense came out firing in the opening match, racking up 71.0 points behind 56 kills and nine aces. Millersville was equally strong defensively, recording 6.0 blocks and 57 digs to keep the pressure on the Cougars throughout the match.
Sam White led the Marauders with 12 kills, tying her career high that she set during her freshman season in 2023. Marissa Storti and Nadia Sawyer combined for 20 kills. White, Becca Hartranft and Julia Chunta each added two aces, while Hailey Lazur, Amanda Protzman and Marin Esch recorded two blocks apiece. Hartranft and Storti each tallied 12 digs, while Chunta finished the match with 25 assists.
The Marauders and Cougars battled evenly in the opening set, trading points to a 7-7 tie. Back-to-back kills from Storti helped Millersville pull ahead 10-7, while Lazur, Esch, Sawyer and Addy Van Oosten continued to keep the offense rolling. The Marauders built their largest lead of the set at 20-15 before Caldwell answered with a 4-0 run. Several Millersville hitting errors allowed the Cougars to even the score at 23. The two teams traded points down the stretch, with Millersville fighting off multiple set points before Caldwell ultimately claimed the opening set 29-27 following a pair of key Marauder errors.
Storti, Alena Lombardo, Addison Reustle and Sidonia Cecco sparked the Marauders to a quick 4-0 lead to open the second set. Millersville continued to build its lead before the Cougars found their footing, going on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the set. With Caldwell leading 18-14, the Marauders regained their rhythm and responded with a 5-0 run, fueled by White, Sawyer, Lombardo and Chunta, to reclaim the lead. Millersville carried the momentum through the final points, taking the second set 25-21.
Two aces from White and kills from Charlee Russick helped the Marauders mirror their fast start from the second set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. Millersville capitalized on several Caldwell errors to extend its advantage to 14-6. The Cougars responded with a 4-0 run, but White and Van Oosten quickly halted the momentum with back-to-back points. Caldwell battled back once again, taking advantage of several Marauder attacking errors to tie the set at 21-21 before taking a one-point lead. After Caldwell committed two attacking errors, White put the finishing touch on the third set with a kill, giving Millersville a 25-23 victory and a 2-1 match lead.
Caldwell continued to battle, with the two teams trading points to open the fourth set. Holding a two-point advantage, White and Alex Nava sparked an 8-0 Marauder run to give Millersville some breathing room. Lombardo and Sawyer helped shut down several Cougar runs as the Marauders maintained their lead. Nava sealed the match with a kill, giving Millersville the four-set victory.
Match Two vs West Virginia State
Millersville finished with 57.0 points, recording 45 kills, five aces, seven blocks, 43 assists and 58 digs. Storti led the Marauders with 14 kills with Nava following behind her at 11. Lazur was a wall at the net, being accredited five blocks. Reustle tallied 22 assists, while Storti and Hartranft combined for 26 digs.
The Marauders opened the match with a 3-2 lead, capitalizing on a few Yellow Jacket errors and a kill from Nava. After the two teams traded points, West Virginia State used a 4-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. Millersville responded by capitalizing on Yellow Jacket errors to chip away at the deficit, while Nava and Lazur helped keep the offense moving. West Virginia State closed out the opening set with a 4-0 run to take the first set.
Millersville jumped out to another early lead, with key plays from White, Lombardo and Storti helping the Marauders take an 8-6 advantage. Three consecutive Yellow Jacket errors allowed Millersville to extend its lead and deepen the deficit for West Virginia State. The Marauders continued to capitalize on Yellow Jacket mistakes, while points from Nava, White, and Chunta helped Millersville close out the second set, 25-19.
West Virginia State opened the third set with a 4-0 run, fueled by three service aces. The Marauders quickly answered with a run of their own, scoring five consecutive points behind White and Lombardo. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead with another scoring run, but Millersville responded once again, taking a one-point advantage at 10-9. The Marauders later built an eight-point lead, capitalizing on more Yellow Jacket errors and kills from Storti, Nava and Lombardo. West Virginia State found its rhythm late, using a 5-0 run to cut into the deficit. With the set tied at 24-24, the Marauders were unable to break through, falling behind 2-1 in the match.
After some errors, the Marauders once again fell into an early whole, with the Yellow Jackets taking a 5-1 lead. With a service ace from Chunta, the Marauders came back within one. At 17-16, the Yellow Jackets went on a 8-4 run to take the second match from the Marauders.
"The first match was more of a struggle than I'd like to see," said head coach Brian Smith. "Match two we played very well against a very good team. Today was a success."
Millersville continues their road stretch when they travel to Shepherd University to face Pitt-Johnstown and Indiana (Pa.) on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
