WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Millersville led No. 19 West Chester by five runs in the opener and led by a run going into the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, but twice the Golden Rams rallied and edged the Marauders by a run, sweeping the final regular season doubleheader by scores of 7-6 and 4-3.
West Chester needed both wins to clinch the No. 1 seed and its first PSAC East title since 2018. The losses cost Millersville a spot in the standings as it finished in a tie for third but dropped to fourth because of a tiebreaker. Millersville will now have to play an opening round PSAC Tournament game against the West's fifth seed on on May 6 for a chance to play PSAC West champ Seton Hill.
The margin of error for the Marauders was razor thin in the final series as all three losses came by one run. West Chester has now won 10 of the last 11 one-run games against Millersville.
Millersville raced to an early 5-0 lead in the opener, scoring five runs in the fourth with an RBI double from Brady Ebbert and RBI singles from Christo Hunsicker, Maddox Yost and Matthew Williams. But the Marauders gave the runs right back. An error to the leadoff hitter of the inning and a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded led to a two-out, game-tying grand slam from Landen Rozich. West Chester took a 7-5 lead in the sixth, but Millersville had a chance in the top of the seventh. Donis Rodriguez homered to cut the deficit to one, and Williams walked and stole second base to move the tying run into scoring position. But the rally stopped there as a pop up and strike out left Williams stranded.
While Millersville came up short with its rally, West Chester did not in the seventh inning of game two. After Christian Cerone's two-out single plated Troy Chamberlin for a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh, The Golden Rams started with a single, walk and hit batsman with one out. Carlos Caraballo entered to put out the fire and struck out Rozich, but Carter Rust, who had three hits in the series opener, delivered again with a walk-off single.
Jimmy Kirk hit his 13th home run of the season earlier in the game. Troy Chamberlin finished with two hits. Matt Shamany provided 6 1/3 strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out eight.
Millersville's opponent for the PSAC Tournament will be determined on Saturday. It will be either Slippery Rock or California, which go head-to-head. The tournament will be held at Slippery Rock.
