EASTON, Pa. - Timothy Peters' final round 69 put him into a playoff where he finished as the Abarta Coca-Cola Invitational runner-up to Merrimack's Kai-Jun Huang. Peters' play led Millersville to a fifth-place finish against 15 Division I programs.
Peters represented the only Division II program in the field, and he very nearly pulled off his third win in as many starts. His 1-under 71 in the opening round put him two shots out of the lead, and he followed that by matching the best round of the tournament on Monday. Peters started his round on the fifth hole, and after four consecutive pars, Peters birdied five of the next eight holes to move to 6-under for the tournament. Bogeys at Nos. 17 and No. 4 dropped Peters back into a tie with Huang. A sudden victory playoff started on the 413-yard, par-4 first hole. Huang parred while Peters bogeyed. Huang shot back-to-back 70's to win.
Peters and Huang edged Fordham's Patrick Ginnity, Sacred Heart's Mike Rothberg and Holy Cross' Alex Elia by one shot.
Millersville finished at 20-over, placing behind the winners, Sacred Heart (4-over), Fairfeld (9-over), Villanova (14-over), and Holy Cross (15-over).
Freshman
Josh Baker finished in 16th place out of 101 golfers, shooting a 3-over total.
Eric Miller finished 55th at 10-over.
Max Pflieger and
Sebastian Botero shot 13-over for 67th, and
Bo Meakim shot a 15-over to place 77th.
Millersville is off until April 15-16 when it competes at the IUP Invitational.
