Dominant second half leads to first conference win for lacrosse

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Millersville wreaked havoc across the field to stomp Bloomsburg, 21–10. The Marauders matched a season-high in goals to preserve an undefeated 5–0 record.

Four Marauders registered season-best performances against the Huskies. On the offensive end, Ashlyn Simonetti scored five goals while Rachel Keeney added four more. Passing-wise, Kayleigh Dunn notched three assists. In addition to standing strong in goal, KC O'Neill scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers.

In a complete effort from the opening draw to the final whistle, Millersville outshot and outscored Bloomsburg in every quarter. The team did not miss a beat as head coach Mike Faith was able to mix in some of his reserves off the bench to keep a healthy lead throughout the game.

"The starters know that players are waiting to come in and we talk about putting pressure on themselves at practice because we have a lot of good players," said Faith. "They took care of the ball today and finished their shots on the offensive end. They know that if they are not playing their best that the next girl up is going to come in and give us a jolt. I think that's where the program is trying to get to that. They know they need to play their A-game or someone else is going to come in and play theirs as well."

The Huskies got on the board first, but the Marauders quickly responded with two goals of their own less than a minute apart to take a lead they would not give up. Simonetti drove the lane and found the back of the net for the Marauders first goal, and Ella Linthicum followed up the effort with the go-ahead tally.

In the first half, Millersville scored eight goals to Bloomsburg's four. The Mauarders showcased their offensive depth as seven different players scored a goal.

Millersville showed no signs of letting up in the third quarter as the attack scored five goals to the Huskies' three, extending the lead to 13–7. Defense was the star of the show in the third quarter as O'Neill made two saves while the team caused six Husky turnovers. Bloomburg's leading goal scorer, Marykate Sitko, was shut down in the second half by Millersville's defense.

"Sitko is a very good player," mentioned Faith. "She's someone we had on the scouting report and were going to be matched up on a midfielder. All of our midfielders are very good defenders and one-on-one defenders. I knew Sitko would get a couple of chances, but I thought defensively, we were pretty locked in on her and did a good job."

A fourth quarter scoring frenzy solidified the win for the Marauders. The Huskies scored two quick goals in the beginning of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 13–9, but the Marauders had a dominantly responded by scoring seven unanswered goals. Kaleigh Funk, Simonetti, and Keeney all registered a pair while Mary Moraca also found the back of the net once.

"Ashlyn's been focused on changing her game and making better decisions," said Faith. I thought she was a great decision maker today. She let the game come to her and when she does that, she's one of the best in the conference. We need to keep her rolling like that because we're a different offense when she's going the way she went today."

The Marauders are 5–0 and 1–0 in PSAC East play, the first time since 2018. Millersville will complete their homestand at noon this Wednesday, March 12 against ranked non-conference opponent No. 19 New Haven.
