WILMINGTON, Del. - Garet Blankenbiller pitched five scoreless innings as Millersville extended its winning streak to five and completed a sweep of Goldey-Beacom with a 10-1 road win Sunday.
Blankenbiller (1-0) surrendered just one hit and struck out six, allowing no runs for the second consecutive start. By the time he exited the game, Millersville led 9-0.
"Blankenbiller has been excellent," said Millersville head coach
Jon Shehan. "He's really improved his arsenal this year. He got into a few deep counts, otherwise he could have thrown another inning or two. It's been an impressive start to the season for him."
Millersville scored a run in six of the nine innings.
Jeff Sabater went 2 for 4 with three runs, one RBI and a steal.
Bren Taylor extended his hit streak to 16 with a fourth-straight multi-hit game, going 2 for 5 with two RBIs.
Amani Jones reached base three times with two hits and a walk and also stole two bases.
Donis Rodriguez drew three walks, and stole a base.
Keegan Soltis dove in a team-high three runs.
Most of Millersville's early offense was manufactured by capitalizing on G-B miscues and productive outs. Only one of the first five runs came in via RBI hit. Millersville scored two runs on wild pitches. G-B committed three errors in the field, helping Millersville to score 10 runs on seven hits.
"We had a good weekend situationally at the plate, and we ran the bases really well too," said Shehan. "Our offense really doesn't allow opposing teams to take a pitch off. It's dynamic. The story today really was pitching and defense, though. We pitched excellent all day and played clean defensively. When we limit free bases to the opposition, we are tough to beat."
After Blankenbiller's five shutout frames,
Rece Ritchey pitched a scoreless sixth.
Zeb Hufnagle made his Millersville debut and worked two innings.
Matt Shamany struck out two in the ninth.
Millersville has scored at least six runs in all six games and has scored 10 or more three times.
The Marauders are back in action Wednesday, March 5 at home against Jefferson.
