LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - At Saturday's Lock Haven Invitational, Millersville cross country received a sneak preview of the site of the upcoming NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship race and looked comfortable, posting a fifth-place finish in a field of 29 teams.
Saturday's meet featured two women's races, and Millersville competed in both, taking fifth in the Crimson race and sixth out of 15 teams in the White race. Millersville's top runners competed in the Crimson race, and the Marauders placed ahead of five PSAC schools and just behind Davis & Elkins, which was ranked No. 2 in the most recent USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Poll. The Marauders finished five team places in front of Bloomsburg (ranked No. 7 in the region poll) and 11 in front of Lock Haven (No. 8 in the region poll).
"It was a strong finish for us today," said Millersville head coach Andy Young. "Our team executed race plans well today and patiently moved up. I think we were in 12th at the mile."
Millersville rallied well, led by Morgan Janiuk, who finished just eight-tenths of a second off of her PR 6K time. Her 21:57.9 placed her 14th overall and second among PSAC runners. Bri Pollock did set a PR, and her 22:50.3 ranks 15th in program history. Emily Massage also ran a career-best time for 57th place. She ran a 23:06.8, which puts her 20th in program history. Hannah Sweda crossed the line in 23:17.7 for 68th place, and Olivia Sunderland rounded out the Marauders' top five with a 23:31.3 for 82nd.
"Morgan Jnaiuk is getting very strong right now and did well against some tough opponents," said Young. "I'm excited to see how next week goes at Paul Short."
The Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University, is another measuring-stick run for the Marauders as the field is usually large and competitive with a host of Division I teams. That race is set for Saturday, Oct. 5.
