BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Millersville women's cross country team took on a challenging field of 35 teams at Saturday's Paul Short Run and finished 23rd.
Millersville competed in the "Brown 6K," which was one of five women's races held by Lehigh University. Twenty three of the 32 teams in Millersville's run were from the Division I ranks. Millersville finished seventh among Division II competitors. PSAC foes, Slippery Rock (16th), Shippensburg (20th), East Stroudsburg (21st) and Kutztown (22nd) finished just in front of the Marauders.
"We tried to race better against some regional foes today in a very large and competitive field," said Millersville head coach Andy Young. "We were competitive but on the wrong side of the points battle. We will need to do a bit better job of staying competitive especially toward the beginning of races where we probably spotted the other teams a bit too much time and distance."
Senior Morgan Janiuk finished 41st and only two other PSAC runners finished before she crossed in a time of 22:36.2. Bri Pollock's 23:15.3 put her in 106th. Emily Massage ran a 23:29.7 for 137th. Hannah Sweda placed two spots later in 23:31.6. Olivia Sunderland rounded out Millersville's top five with a time of 23:47.3, good for 167th in the 286-runner field.
"We have three weeks until the PSAC Championships and five weeks to regionals to try to close gaps."
Millersville rests until the Aubrey Shenk Invitational at Gettysburg on Oct. 19 when it has one final tune-up for the PSAC Championship on Oct. 26.
