Marauders season ends after tournament loss to Lakers

EDINBORO, Pa. — The Millersville men's tennis team was defeated by Mercyhurst 4–0 in the preliminary round of the NCAA Tournament. The Marauders finish the season with a 13–8 record.

After splitting the first two matches this season, the Lakers took the third one when it mattered most in the post season. Mercyhurst won the first meeting in mid-March with a decisive 6–1 win, but the Marauders bounced back in the PSAC Tournament semifinals to upset the Lakers 4–2. Although the Lakers came away from today's match with a 4–0 shutout victory, it was a tightly contested match that was close from start to finish. The Lakers won the top doubles match quickly, shifting all eyes to the second and third matches still being played. Valentin Ebner and Jasper de Koning held a 5–4 lead in their match, but it was called after Lino Morin and Sebas Castro fell in a back-and-forth slugfest to give Mercyhurst the early lead.

Although the Marauders battled and were in nearly every match, Mercyhurst won the first three matches to advance in the NCAA Tournament. Morin nearly extended the match, but fell 6–7 in the final set, clinching the win for the Lakers. Millersville looked primed to take any sort of advantage they could get to extend the match, as Dylan Tull, Breno Maciel, and de Koning all won the first sets of their matches. However, their bouts went down as unfinished, ending the Marauders season in the 4–0 loss.

It was a positive and somewhat surprising year for the Marauders, as they broke out down the stretch of the regular season for their best campaign in 13 years. Millersville won eight straight matches to end the regular season before defeating the Lakers in the conference tournament semifinals for their first championship appearance since 2005. In the process of hitting double-digit wins for the first time since 2010-11, the Marauders made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since that season as well.
