No. 3 Tampa uses fast start to top Marauders

HOUSTON, Texas - Just 12 hours after concluding a dramatic Opening Day win over the No. 5 team in the country, the seventh-ranked Millersville Marauders were tasked with slowing third-ranked Tampa. Tampa used a five-run first and a strong starting pitching performance from Skylar Gonzalez to top Millersville, 13-1.

Tampa (2-0) has now scored 30 runs in the first two games of the season including Friday's 17-5 win against Arkansas Tech. The Spartans scored their 13 runs on just nine hits but patiently worked 10 walks and 12 total free passes as six Millersville pitchers combined to throw 156 pitches in just seven innings.

Falling behind in the count was an issue that began in the first inning for the Millersville staff. The Spartans' first three hits of the game came on full counts, and J.P. Gates worked a full-count, bases-loaded walk to plate the game's second run. Gromlich did settle in and posted two shutout innings before exiting after the third.

Millersville's bats could not keep pace against the Tampa duo of Gonzalez (1-0) and Eli Thurmond, who picked up the save with three innings of relief work. Gonzalez surrendered one hit and two walks while striking out five in four innings. Thurmond pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth before Matthew Williams' solo home run in the seventh, giving Millersville its lone run of the game. Millersville put more than one runner on base once, and that was in the top of the first when Cole Houser and Mark McNelly drew two-out walks before the inning ended with a Gonzalez strikeout.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
