LANCASTER, Pa. – The Marauders men's tennis team kicked off its spring season with a 6–1 win over Salem University on Friday night.
Millersville was able to secure the point from the doubles matches, winning two of the three. Dylan Tull and Zach Pernia were victorious as the top pair, winning 6–1. Breno Maciel and Victor Suarez were the third pair for Millersville, winning 6–3 to give the Marauders the edge.
The Marauders had plenty of success in singles play as well, as they won five of the six matches. Pernia won his match in three sets 6–3, 1–6, 1–0, and Maciel followed him with a 6–3, 6–1 victory. The Marauders fourth, fifth, and sixth players all won in two sets, as Lino Morin won 6–3, 6–0, Valentin Ebner won 6–3, 6–2, and Jasper de Koning came away with a 6–1, 6–4 win.
The Marauders are now 3–0 on the season and will return to action during their spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH MATT HELSEL
Overall thoughts on the win: "One of my favorite things is beating a team that beat us last year. To do in the first match of the spring, and to do it in such a big turnaround- from losing 2-5 to winning 6-1- is extremely satisfying. We have such a young and talented team, but tonight we relied on our most experienced players, and they were fantastic. Zach and Dylan got us started with a dominating performance. Singles was difficult at the top of the lineup, but they battled hard and allowed the rest of our lineup to really settle in and get into a great rhythm.
As happy as I am with this complete performance, I can't be any prouder than I am for Lino Morin. He's struggled and played through injuries the last two years. To see him play tonight was a treat. So happy for him and he really deserves to enjoy this one. I think we all can get spoiled with how lucky we are to do what we do and it's easy to take things for granted, but I know Lino truly appreciated simply the ability to just play. Playing well and winning were just bonuses."
