ABOUT THE MEET
The Marauders’ regular season has come to a close and the team finished with a dual record of 5-2. This Wednesday through Saturday, the Millersville competes in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. 16 Marauders have qualified and will compete in individual and relay events throughout the four days of competition.
Head coach Evan Anthony is eager to head to the conference championships for the first time as a head coach. Anthony is no stranger to this level of competition, as well as the emotion that can stem from an event as big as the PSAC Championships thanks to his career as a student-athlete at Shippensburg. Over the last few weeks, Anthony and his staff have worked with the team to train both physically and mentally, instilling a positive mindset and reassuring the athletes that they are ready.
“One thing I say before every meet is to be the best athlete you can possibly be," said Anthony. “We don't want to get distracted by everything around us. If you strive to be the best knowing you put in the work, then great things will happen. We want to race hard against others but stay focused at the same time.”
Along with having a good mindset and proper training, comes motivation. Since the beginning of the season, the Marauders have stuck together, pushing each to get better each day. Heading into the conference championship they will continue to do just that.
“They not only want to swim fast, but they want to do it for each other. We have athletes competing across all events who all have the chance to make an impact. We are all extremely excited to see what we are capable of as a team” Anthony said.
MARAUDERS TO WATCH
Last season the Marauders finished seventh at the PSAC Championship, earning their highest placement in team history. As a team they accumulated 534 points, outscoring their previous record by 137.
Returning veterans, Jordan Plempel, Claire Weaver, and Jane McClelland have continued to play an influential role in their teams’ success, combining for several first-place victories throughout the season. At the championship meet in 2023, Plempel reached the podium in the 400-yard individual medley and the 200 IM. She also broke the school’s 400 IM record by 16 seconds.
Plempel is seeded in the top 10 for several events this weekend:
- #7 200 IM (2:08.08)
- #6 400 IM (4:37.94)
- #10 200 back (2:07.54)
Weaver began her career with the Marauders last season, and it was nothing short of spectacular. During her freshman year she earned a placed in the all-time top-10 in four events:
- 500-yard freestyle (2nd)
- 100-yard backstroke (9th)
- 200-yard backstroke (4th)
- 200- yard freestyle (3rd)
She has continued to excel during her 2023-24 campaign and is on track for a successful championship meet. Weaver was seeded 13th in the 500 free (5:10.86) and 16th in the 200 free (1:56.96)
Several other swimmers are returning to the PSAC Championships for the Marauders including Jewels Hepner, Leah Eckert, Kristen Maile, Becca Yeager, Alaina Rowe, Ava Adiletti, Kate Pelagatti, Illana Jacobson, Leah Miksa, Lindsay Robbins, and Mackenzie Yosko.
Newcomers Taylor Madison and Olivia Terrazas will also be joining the Marauders, making their first appearance at the conference meet.
Prelims begin at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, Feb.14
