Overtime opportunity puts the Marauders back in the win column

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville field hockey pulled out a 1-0 overtime victory over Limestone at home Saturday thanks to a game-winning goal from Emma Ruley.

Ruley and the Marauders capitalized quickly in the overtime period, earning three shots off two penalty corners in the opening minute. They also took advantage of a man-up situation as Limestone's Victoria Gonzalez-Lopez was penalized with a yellow card in the 58th minute of regulation.

On Ruley's game-winner, Saige Shine served the penalty corner insert to Gianna Cugino, whose shot was saved by Limestone keeper Taylor Rawlings. Ruley scored off the rebound.

The Saints challenged the Marauders in the fourth quarter. They earned eight penalty corners and seven shots. Marauder goalkeeper Kerstin Koons led the defense with four crucial saves, keeping the game scoreless.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Millersville took seven shots and placed six on goal.
  • Koons made four saves in net and notched her third shutout.
  • The Marauders had five penalty corners to the Saints 10.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH SHELLY BEHRENS

  • Overall thoughts today: "I think we were a different team from Thursday, and I'm proud of them for that, especially with just one day in between. What a difference a day and a mentality can make. Credit to Limestone—they're a strong team, and this is a great win for us, especially at home and coming out on top in an overtime match"
  • Changes from Thursday's game to today: "Several things changed, we made some positional changes. I think honestly, it was them and me helping them realize what was inside. They have the skill, ability, and connectivity, and the secret missing element is them. Staying together is our secret. When we stay together, we are good."
  • Thoughts on control and pace of the game: "I was not a fan of playing more defensively in the second half. We made some corrections mid-game with them and sometimes the message gets in and sometimes it doesn't. We have different personnel, some with an attacking mindset others with a defensive, we want everyone to be attacking together and defending together. I would have liked to earn more corners today but we earned and scored on the one that mattered the most."
  • Preparation for the upcoming game against Bloomsburg: "Enjoy this win for 24 hours. We also know the remaining conference games matter for what we want to go but also everyone else in the conference. Conference games are fun and they bring out the best in you so I can't wait to see what our team does."
UP NEXT
