ABOUT THE GAME

  • The Millersville Marauders (7-10, 5-6) head to East Stroudsburg to take on the Warriors (6-10, 4-7) in a PSAC Eastern Division clash. The game is crucially important for both teams, as the Warriors could leapfrog the Marauders in the standings with a victory. The 'Ville would be in danger of falling out of a playoff spot and moving from fourth to sixth behind Mansfield.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville enters hoping to get back on track after falling in back-to-back games for the first time since 2023, the most recent of which was a last-second 64-60 loss against Kutztown. The Marauders are in danger of falling out of a playoff spot in the PSAC East and being overtaken by both the Warriors and the Mansfield Mountaineers with a loss.
  • Two team statistics that have been predictive of the final results are halftime scores and the turnover battle. The team with the halftime advantage has gone on to win the game in 14 of the ‘Ville’s 17 games thus far. They have a 5-1 mark when leading at half and a 2-9 mark when trailing. They threatened to buck that trend with a 28-11 advantage in the third quarter, but it held true in the end. The Marauders did a good job of taking care of the ball through three quarters against Kutztown but fell apart in the fourth quarter; nine of their 19 total turnovers came in the final period. The turnover margin has been crucially important throughout the 2023-34 campaign, as they are 4-0 when winning that battle and 3-10 when failing to do so.
  • Millersville displayed a drastic improvement on the glass despite the loss. Its 52 total and 28 offensive rebounds were both season-bests by nearly double-figures. After getting out-rebounded by five on the offensive end by Mansfield, they took it to the Golden Bears, nearly tripling their opponent's eight offensive boards. Brenna Ortwein led the way with a season-high 11 and Sophie Elstone followed close behind with a season-high nine, six of which were on the offensive end. Elstone was one rebound away from the Marauder's second double-double of the season, as she also had 10 points.
  • Ortwein continues to be a thorn in the side of opposing offenses. She's tallied a steal in 11 straight games and had recorded multiple steals in seven straight games prior to the game against Kutztown. Her 1.9 steals per game leads the team and is good for ninth in the PSAC. With those 11 rebounds, the junior raised her team-leading rebounding average to 5.6.
  • The offensive focus centers on the two starting Marauder bigs: Makiah Shaw and La'Shyra Williams. The pair is first and second on the team in points per game with 12.5 and 10.6, respectively. One of the two has paced the team in scoring in each of the last six games.
  • Redshirt Junior Madison Grubb started against the Golden Bears in lieu of Jabria Ingram. It remains to be seen whether Ingram will play in this contest, but expect Grubb to slot in at the other guard position opposite Sophie Elstone if not. It was Grubb's second start of the season and third of her career. Ingram is tops on the Marauders in assists per game and her mark of 4.2 dimes per contest is good for fifth in the PSAC. The Marauders are 4-2 when Ingram starts.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS

  • Like their opponents, the Warriors have done a good job of beating the teams they're supposed to beat according to their record and standings. On the flip side of that, they also don't have a win against a team with more than two conference victories. The combined PSAC record of teams East Stroudsburg has beaten is 5-41, while the combined record of their losses is 40-16. They will be looking for their third straight victory after downing Bloomsburg and Shippensburg in the past week.
  • This matchup shapes up to be a battle in the paint, as East Stroudsburg is seventeenth of 18 teams in the PSAC in three-pointers made. The only team with fewer is Millersville. The Warriors haven't fared much better inside the arc either, as they're sixteenth in the conference in team field goal percentage (35.6%). Their company at the bottom of those rankings is less than stellar; the bottom two teams in both divisions sit two above and two below them.
  • Those numbers are a contributing factor as to why the Warriors are dead last in the conference in points per game at 51.4. In comparison, the Marauders sit fourteenth with a mark of 59.1.
  • Despite that number, junior guard Corrin Gill has managed to break into the top 10 in assists per game at 3.0, good for ninth in the PSAC. She leads East Stroudsburg in both that and steals per game (1.3) among qualifying players. Izzy Vogel ranks second on the team in steals but leads them in scoring at 8.3 points per contest. She's reached double-figures six times in the 2023-24 campaign and did so yet again against Bloomsburg on Jan. 24, pacing her team with 16.

SERIES HISTORY

  • This is technically the second-longest rivalry in Millersville women's basketball history. These two programs first met during the 1922-23 season but didn't do so again until 1951-52. It was in the 1978-79 campaign that they began meeting on a consistent basis. Millersville holds a clear edge in the all-time series with a 58-33 mark with most of the damage coming since 1998. The Marauders have a sparkling 42-13 record against the Warriors since then, including winning streaks of 16 and 10 games. The 'Ville is working on another streak right now, as they have taken each of the last five bouts. The last time these two teams met was in the first round of the PSAC East playoffs last season, and the Marauders emerged with a 72-65 win to move on.
