Late offense and dominant pitching lead 'Ville to sweep over Shippensburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville softball team bounced back from Sunday's loss at Lock Haven with a doubleheader sweep over Shippensburg on Monday at Seaber Softball Stadium.

Millersville started its rescheduled doubleheader with a nine-run, five inning victory. The Marauders recorded 10 hits and 10 runs en route to the 10-1 win. In game two, the Marauders rallied late, scoring two runs in the sixth to secure a 2-1 victory and sweep.

'Ville improves to 16-14 on the season and 5-5 in PSAC East play. Shippensburg falls to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in conference action.

GAME ONE
  • Alex Schaefer threw a complete game (five innings), fanned six Raiders and allowed just three hits and one run. The junior moved to 12-6 on the season.
  • Shippensburg scored its lone run off Schaefer in the first off a solo-shot to center field. It was all Marauders the rest of the way.
  • Millersville began its scoring in the first as Aleese Angelo hit an RBI-double to left center.
  • The 'Ville scoring continued in the third with an Allyson Black bases-loaded walk followed by a Victoria Fuss two-RBI single to put the Marauders up 4-1.
  • The Marauder offense didn't slow down in the fourth, scoring six additional runs to take a nine-run lead. Gabby D'Ottavio started the scoring with an RBI-single to left field and was followed by a Black two-RBI single to left. Fuss provided the fireworks with a three-run homerun to center field.  
  • Angelo went 3-for-3 from the plate to lead the Marauders in hits. Lacey O'Donnell (2-for-4) and Fuss (2-for-3) followed with multi-hit games.
  • Fuss drove in a career-high five RBI's and hit her third long ball of the season.
GAME TWO
  • The second game featured a pitching duel between Bumgardner and Ship's Maelynn Leber -- each pitcher threw five scoreless innings to start the game.
  • Shippensburg broke the scoreless tie in sixth-inning play following a pair of Marauder errors that allowed a run to score.
  • 'Ville jumped on the board in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring two runs on back-to-back RBI doubles from D'Ottavio and Bumgardner.
  • Schaefer came in for the save, which marks her first of the season. Bumgardner threw six innings, recorded two strikeouts and earned her first conference win.

  • "We keep building, learning and not giving up. Kendra worked hard for her first career conference win. We were on the ball all day throughout the line up. We will take the rest of the day to celebrate then its back to work, full focus on tomorrow vs Kutztown."

  • The Marauders will head to Kutztown on Tuesday, April 4 for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
