ABOUT THE MEET
The Marauders finished out their regular season dual schedule with a 6-3 record including a 5-0 record at home. This Wednesday through Saturday the Marauders will be competing in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. The Marauders will bring the largest roster in school history with 18 swimmers racing in individual events and relays throughout the four days of competition.
Coach Eric Usbeck is now in his fourth season with the Marauders and eager to return to the conference championships. For the last two weeks, Coach Usbeck and his assistant coaches have been preparing the team physically and mentally for what is to come in these next few days.
“For the most part it is keeping everyone doing the same stuff," Usbeck said. "We are not trying to reinvent the wheel the last two weeks. We have done the work. At this point we have done the work, and it is just fine tuning and finishing off the preparation.”
MARAUDERS TO WATCH
In last season’s PSAC Championships, the Marauders finished in eighth place, tying for the best finish since the 2004 season. Several of swimmers who competed last year return including Jewels Hepner, Jordan Plempel, Ava Adiletti, Alaina Rowe, Leah Miska, Becca Yeager, and Mackenzie Yosko.
In addition to veterans, the Marauders also send freshmen Leah Eckert, Kristen Maile, Jane McClelland, Avery Huysentruyt, Kate Pelagatti, and Claire Weaver. Millersville has eight swimmers ranked in the top eight of individual events, and five relay teams rank in the top six.
Plempel, Weaver, and McClelland have been powerhouses for the Marauders this season and are swimmers to watch at the meet.
Last year, Plempel had three top-10 finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (58.75), 200-yard IM (2:07.65), and the 400-yard IM (4:39.65). During the 2022-23 season Plempel has set multiple PRs and broken a handful of records. She is the top swimmer on the team in four events.
- 50-yard free (24.39)
- 100-yard free (53.39)
- 50-yard breast (30.05)
- 200- yard IM (2:09.14)
Weaver is another standout for this Marauder team. She has wasted no time writing her name in the history books. Just this season she has cracked the all-time top-10 in four events.
- 200- yard freestyle (3rd)
- 500-yard freestyle (2nd)
- 100-yard backstroke (9th)
- 200-yard backstroke (4th)
It has also been a breakout year for freshman McClelland. In the first race of her college career, McClelland swam a 11:01.51 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, making her the fifth fastest Marauder to ever swim that event.
Millersville hopes to continue this momentum and energy into the PSAC Championship.
“I think for the most part it is remembering that this is just a swim meet,” said Usbeck. “It is no different than any other year. There is plenty of good competition within the conference.”
Prelims begin at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, Feb.15.
