ABOUT THE MATCH

  • Millersville women's basketball travels to Amherst, NY to take on the Daemen Wildcats for the first time in program history. Both team's records sit at 1-1 after the first weekend of the season. The Marauders fell to Virginia Union on Nov. 10 but claimed their first win of the season against Shaw in overtime on Nov. 12. Daemen opened their campaign with a loss to Bentley before notching a victory over Felician on Nov. 11.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville enters this game coming off a come from behind victory in overtime against the Shaw Bears on Nov. 12. The Marauders' second half defense was pivotal in the win. After giving up 40 points in the first 20 minutes, they allotted the Bears just 28 throughout the final 25.
  • A few trends have appeared over the first two contests of the season. Makiah Shaw has been the Marauders' go-to player on both ends of the floor, leading the team in rebounds per game with six and points per game at 12.5. Shaw is doing so on 45.8% shooting.
  • Millersville's junior big ranks second on the team in minutes per game thus far at 31.0. Her teammate in the frontcourt, Morgan Mahoney, currently paces the Marauders at 31.5. Mahoney and Shaw have shouldered the bulk of the offensive load so far with 20 and 24 field goals attempted, respectively. That's seven more than third-place Jabria Ingram, who has 13.
  • Other Marauder starters Marin Miller, Brenna Ortwein and Sophie Elstone have contributed as well. Miller's averaged 10 PPG on 64% from the field over the first two contests while Ortwein grabbed the second most rebounds (nine total) in addition to the second-most assists (six total). 
  • Ingram and Jillian Crawford have been factors off the bench in the first two contests. Ingram's tops on the 'Ville in assists after the first weekend (eight total, four APG) and Crawford led the team in scoring against Shaw, going six-of-nine for 18 points. 
  • The Marauders were picked to finish seventh of nine teams in the PSAC East according to the conference's Preseason Coaches Poll.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS

  • The Wildcats enter the game with a 1-1 record on the season after losing to Bentley in game one and dominating Felician in game two. They're led by head coach Jenepher Banker, who enters her eighth season after finishing 20-5 overall and winning the ECC Championship. She also guided the Wildcats to a berth in the NCAA Tournament where they fell in the first round. Daemen was selected to finish second of nine teams in the ECC in the conference's 2023-24 Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • This team has three starters remaining from last year's ECC Championship winning squad, a trio of seniors. Alanha Paige earned Second-Team All-ECC last season averaging 10 PPG and has been a fixture in their lineup this year. She paced the team in scoring against Bentley with 24 points to add to her five rebounds. She's a three-point threat as well, averaging seven such attempts over the first two games and making them at a 50% rate. She's also led the Wildcats in MPG by more than 10 this season at 34.0. 
  • The two other returning starters are Natalie Angeletti and Kaytlyn Matz. The pair of six-foot forwards will anchor the frontcourt for Daemen. Matz has averaged a block per contest in just over 16 minutes per game thus far and Angeletti's got three steals. 
  • Senior Gabby McDuffie has entered the starting lineup for Daemen and taken advantage of the opportunity. She's averaging 13.0 PPG, second on the team, and shooting over 81% at the free-throw line (13-16). She also led the Wildcats in scoring in their last game against Felician with 18 points. 
  • Daemen features experience and height in their starting five. Three starters are listed at six-foot or taller and four of the five are seniors. 
  • Since the 2018-19 season, Daemen owns a 50-6 overall record on their home court. This stretch includes two seasons of undefeated play at home (2019-20 & 2022-23). The Wildcats haven't lost at home since Feb. 18, 2022 when they fell to St. Thomas Aquinas.

THE LAST TIME OUT

  • Millersville: Millersville 74, Shaw 68 (Nov. 12, 2023) - Millersville captured its first victory of the season in overtime against the Shaw Bears by a score of 74-68. After a first half in which they gave up 40 points, the Marauders allotted the Bears just 28 in the final 25 minutes. Jillian Crawford came off of the bench and led the team in scoring with 18 on nine shots. Morgan Mahoney took the offensive reins in overtime, outscoring 6-4 Shaw by herself.
  • Daemen:  Daemen 74, Felician 57 (Nov. 11, 2023) - The Wildcats also captured their first victory of the 2023-24 campaign last time out against Felician. 21 opponent turnovers and a +16 advantage in free throws made for Daemen led to the large score differential. Gabby McDuffie led the Wildcats in scoring with 18 while three of her teammates reached double-figures as well.
