Marauders cruise to season-opening win over Livingstone

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Drew Stover scored a career-high 25 points, Jaden Faulkner returned to Millersville's lineup for the first time since March of 2022 with 11 assists, and the Marauders opened their season Saturday with an 86-73 win over Livingstone.
Faulkner missed all of the 2022-23 recovering from a second knee surgery, but on Saturday, the two-time All-PSAC East selection did a bit of everything, adding nine points, five rebounds and a game-high four steals. Matt Dade chipped in 15 points and six rebounds, and Day Waters scored a career-high 14 points, hitting 2-of-3 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the line.
"(Jaden) brings leadership," said Millersville head coach Casey Stitzel. "He's still getting back, and he's going to keep getting better at finishing at the rim. He's going to get that rust off. But his leadership, talking to the guys and to me about what's working, holding guys accountable after games, understands that even though we won the game, there are a lot of lessons to be learned. He's invaluable, and the scary part is that he's only going to get better."
The Marauders shot 49.3% from the field and aggressively attacked the rim as 61 of the 71 field goal attempts were from two-point range. Millersville canned 5-of-10 3-pointers.
The Marauders led by as many as 15 points in the first half, and started the second half on a 7-0 run that included five points from Waters. A 3-pointer from Jahme Ested three minutes in gave Millersville a 55-30 advantage, and the lead was still at 25 (74-49) after a pair of Waters free throws with 6:47 to play. Livingstone chipped into that lead by shooting 5-of-5 from three in the final six minutes, but Millersville's lead was far too much to overcome with a late spurt.
"For 30 minutes we played pretty well," said Stitzel. "You see that at every level. You watch the NBA and see a team go up 25 in the first quarter, turn it back on in the fourth and it's a one-possession game. We just have to get better at playing with the lead. We took our foot off the pedal. With back-to-back games, I tried to do some sub patterns and get some guys some rest, I'll own some of that. Some of the guys we had in there should be able to finish the game and not let it get so close. Credit to Livingstone, they made some tough shots down the stretch."
