MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team came into Saturday's tilt against Mansfield with just two goals in their previous five games, which was tied for last in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) – that all changed in the second half as the Marauders (1-4-1, 1-3-1 PSAC East) scored six unanswered goals to shutout the visiting Mountaineers (1-5-1, 0-5-1 PSAC East).
The Marauders huge second half started on a touch by Taylor Whitmer. Whitmer positioned herself in front of the Mountaineer goal before receiving a pass from Palina Jordan in the 53'. The graduate transfer was able to guide the ball into the Mansfield net with her right foot to give the Marauders their first lead.
Just over a minute a minute later the Marauders would strike again off a near-perfect corner kick by Rachel Leisher. Leisher, positioned on the right side of the Mountaineer box from the keeper's view, bent a corner into the far side of Mansfield's net that deflected off an opposing defender and in.
'Ville wasn't nearly done though, scoring two more goals in the next four minutes, courtesy of Aalivia Wainwright and Jordan, to extend its lead to four.
The Marauders would score two more goals down the stretch as Morgan Winchock and Savannah Rennix each assisted each other on a score to give the program its largest win since beating Salem on Sept. 15 in 2019 by a score of 8-0.
Millersville will enjoy the win before gearing up for three straight games against three of the top-four teams in the PSAC East standings including No. 5 West Chester, No. 14 Kutztown and East Stroudsburg.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO
Overall thoughts on the win: "We settled into the game well in the second half. We executed well in the second which was what we needed. The past is the past so all we can do is play the game in front of us which we did today. It was a step in the right direction."
Halftime message: "Message in the second half was simple. Play our game and execute better, that was the difference in the second half along with better overall play."
On the tough stretch of games ahead: "Enjoy this game till tomorrow morning and then we move on. Every game must be a championship mentality. We have to work for everything ranked or unranked it doesn't matter we need to do our part."
