LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - After winning its first PSAC East championship, the Millersville women's tennis team cleaned up in the PSAC East award presentations Friday as Jasmine Morris was voted the PSAC East Athlete of the Year, Chloe Abramowitz won PSAC East Freshman of the Year, and head coach Matt Helsel was named PSAC East Coach of the Year. It is the first time since 1998 that Millersville captured all three top awards.
In addition to the three major award winners, Morris, Maria Ojeda and Noelle Htwar landed a spot on the All-PSAC East Singles First Team, and Julie Wallace was named to the second team. Millersville's top doubles tandem of Htwar and Wallace earned one of three All-PSAC East Doubles First Team spots, and Morris and Kelsey Heckert earned second team mention in doubles.
Morris is the first Marauder since hall of famer Lauren Witmer (2000 and 2001) to be named the division's athlete of the year. Morris, now a two-time first team selection in singles and a three-time doubles honoree, played in the No. 1 flight for the Marauders and went undefeated in three completed matches vs. PSAC East opponents. Her three-set victory over Tori Alexander of West Chester helped the Marauders beat the Golden Rams in a regular season dual for the first time in a decade and take control of the PSAC East. And for the second season in a row, the Morris-Heckert tandem consistently won. The pairing went 4-0 against the PSAC East, and Heckert completed her Millersville career undefeated in PSAC East doubles matches.
Abramowitz gives Millersville the PSAC East Freshman of the Year for the second season in a row, as Htwar won the award in 2021. Abramowitz gave the Marauders excellent depth, posting a 15-12 overall record and a 6-1 record vs. the PSAC East playing in the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 spots in the lineup. She is just the fifth Marauder to win the award since the first winner (Pam Kaylor) in 1998.
Helsel is now a back-to-back coach of the year award winner after leading the Marauders to a 7-0 against the PSAC East this season, reaching the PSAC Semifinals and earning an NCAA Atlantic Regional ranking as high as No. 7. Millersville's 15-8 record represented the program's most wins since 2001.
Ojeda made her way to first team singles after earning second team recognition in 2021. Ojeda played primarily in the No. 2 flight for the Marauders but also filled in at the No. 1 spot six times. She went 4-1 in completed matches against PSAC East competition. Htwar finished her season 15-12 with a 6-1 division record. She went 5-2 in the No. 2 flight and earned seven wins in the No. 3 spot. Wallace, a first team singles selection in 2021, totaled a 14-12 record, including a spotless 6-0 mark against the PSAC East. She went 7-2 in the No. 3 flight and 6-4 at No. 4.
Htwar and Wallace were first team doubles picks for the second season in a row. The tandem proved to be one of the best in the conference by going 16-12 with a 5-1 record against the PSAC East.
