MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Carlos Martinez-Lucas has made Millersville history by becoming the first Marauder to be named the PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Year twice. The Marauders' senior was also recognized Friday as part of the All-PSAC teams as first team singles and first team doubles with teammate Frank Yanni, and Dylan Tull was named All-PSAC Singles Second Team.
Since Millersville's Oliver Merrill won the first PSAC Athlete of the Year award in 1989, only four players have won the award more than once. That group includes Bloomsburg's Jeremy Eby (1993-94), Bloomsburg's Dan Gal (2007-08), Edinboro's Victor Albanese (2015-18) and now Martinez-Lucas, who also won the top honor in 2019. Martinez-Lucas also joins Greg Bennett (2005-07) as the only Marauders named All-PSAC First Team Singles three times.
Martinez-Lucas posted a 16-8 overall record in 2021-22, and went 4-1 against PSAC competition. He closed his season with a straight-sets victory in the PSAC Tournament against Mercyhurst. Martinez-Lucas reached the finals of the PSAC Singles Championship while also winning the conference's doubles title with Yanni.
Martinez-Lucas and Yanni produced one of the all-time great doubles seasons in Millersville history, going 21-3 with a 5-1 conference record and a 15-1 record in duals. The team reached a national ranking as high as No. 33. The 21 wins rank as the fourth-most in Millersville history and the .875 winning percentage as the fifth highest. Over the span of two seasons, Martinez-Lucas and Yanni teamed for a 32-5 record, earning All-PSAC Doubles First Team recognition twice. The team finishes with the best career winning percentage among Millersville teams and tied for the third-most victories.
Tull made an immediate impact in his first season as a Marauder. He led the team in victories, posting a 17-7 record, including a 4-1 mark in PSAC action. He played primarily in the No. 3 flight, winning eight of nine matches in that position.
