MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders have had a strong showing during the outdoor track and field season, recording a pair of first place finishes in the three meets that featured team scoring. The Marauders won multiple events in all eight meets this spring. 'Ville will look to translate that success into a top finish the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships this Thursday through Saturday.
Millersville is coming off a fifth-place finish in the 2021 Championship after finishing in second place in both 2018 and 2019. The Marauders have won the PSAC Championship four times, winning three in a row from 1990-92 and again in 1996.
Hannah Woelfling and Aliyah Striver highlight the returning core of Marauders. Woelfling is the reigning hammer throw champion (187-5) while Striver is coming off a runner up finish (172-10) in last year's championship meet. Striver was also on the podium in the shot put, taking third (42-10 ¼) and Woelfing was the runner up in the discus (144-7). This year, Woelfling is the No. 1 seed in both the discus and hammer throw while Striver is the No. 2 seed in the discus.
Freshman Darian Hauf is the newcomer to watch, slotting in as the top seed in the pole vault with a program record height of 12-11 ½. She was a state champion in Maryland during her high school career.
The Marauders were ranked as the No. 2 team in the PSAC, No. 2 in the Atlantic Region, and 31st in the nation in the most recent USTFCCCA poll. Millersville was ranked as high as 25th in the nation throughout the first seven weeks of polling.
"On paper we have a great opportunity to win our first PSAC championship since 1996," head coach Andy Young said. "We expect a tough battle especially from Ship and SRU who have had a strangle hold on the championship for a very long time."
Slippery Rock is the lone team ranked ahead of Millersville in both the conference and regional poll.
This year's championship is hosted by Millersville University on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium and is the second home event of the year for the Marauders. The team dominated the Millersville Metrics earlier this spring, scoring 172.50 points, the most in the 39-year history of the meet.
"We are excited and comfortable competing at home, and I think our performances this spring should give our team some confidence," Young said.
In total Millersville will send 24 student-athletes to compete in individual events, the largest group of participants in program history.
