ABOUT THE GAME

  • The two teams with the most wins in the PSAC meet Friday at Cooper Park, starting a key, three-game PSAC East series. Millersville comes into the series unbeaten in the PSAC East (6-0) and riding an 11-game winning streak. The Marauders climbed up to No. 21 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Division II Poll. No. 29-ranked East Stroudsburg has already produced a 15-game winning streak this season and has taken two of three games in its first two PSAC East series.
  • Competition in the PSAC is as tough as ever with six teams currently ranked in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30, and Cal U sits just on the outside, receiving votes. No team in the league has won more games than East Stroudsburg's 21, but it is Millersville who holds the top winning percentage (.800) among teams with at least 17 games played.
  • Millersville is already 10-1 at home and has scored at least seven runs in eight of those games. Luke Trainer (18-for-36) and Bren Taylor (20-for-40) are both hitting an astounding .500 at Cooper Park. Trainer has totaled two home runs, five doubles, a triple and an .861 slugging percentage at home. Pitching has also been outstanding at home as the Marauders' staff has posted a 2.44 ERA and .220 batting average against with three shutouts. Millersville has out-homered its opponents 16-2 at Cooper Park.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • During the recent 11-game winning streak (the team's longest since 2016), the Marauders have outscored opponents 116-38, averaging 10.5 runs per game. Millersville has hit .337 with a .552 slugging percentage in that stretch, out-homering teams 14-3. Millersville has averaged more than four extra-base hits per game during the streak. Millersville has also been far more aggressive on the base paths lately. After stealing 14 bases in the first 15 games, Millesville has swiped 27 in 29 tries in the last 11 games. Six of seven hitters with at least 10 starts have hit over .300 during the streak.
  • As a team, Millersville ranks second in the PSAC in hitting (.330), first in doubles (61), third in home runs (31) and third in slugging (.539). Millersville ranks in the top 25 nationally in scoring, batting average, doubles, slugging percentage and on base percentage.
  • Millersville's pitching staff ranks second in the PSAC in ERA (3.03) and is second in strikeouts (218) only to East Stroudsburg, which has totaled 232. Ben Wilchacky is the PSAC leader in wins with a 6-0 record. Kris Pirozzi is second in saves with four.
  • Trainer ranks second in the league in average (.435) and fifth in OBP (.500) while Thomas Caufield is first in RBIs (36) and doubles (12), eighth in average (.398), seventh in slugging (.774) and sixth in OPS (1.237). Jimmy Losh leads the league in runs with 34.
  • Caufield recently hit his seventh home run of the season, which puts him in a tie for 17th for most homers in a single-season at Millersville. It also ties Eric Callahan's single-season record for a shortstop.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS

  • East Stroudsburg's bats have cooled since a 3-2 loss to Pace on March 15, but the pitching staff has kept the Warriors winning. They've averaged just 3.9 runs per game over the last seven games but have managed to win four of those. East Stroudsburg has heled its opponent to three runs or fewer in 17 of 27 games. By comparison, Millersville has done the same in 15 of 25 games.
  • While the Warriors are slashing .287/.400/.463 as a team, they are averaging nearly a home run per game and manufacture runs with speed on bases. East Stroudsburg ranks second in the PSAC with 73 steals in 84 attempts. Ben Piripavel is not only the team's leading hitter, but he also ranks first in the PSAC in steals with 18.
  • Chase Nowak is among the top pitchers in the PSAC, holding a 3-0 record, 1.98 ERA and .189 batting average against in 36 ? innings covering seven starts. He's logged at least five innings in each of his last six starts and has not allowed more than three runs in any start this season. Brent Francisco has also flashed dominance. He had a 14-strikeout game against Saint Rose on Feb. 20, and he's fanned 13 with just one walk in 13 innings against two PSAC East foes.

SERIES HISTORY VS. EAST STROUDSBURG

  • While 2022 marks the first PSAC season with a three-game series rather than a four-game series, Millersville has won at least three of four games each season since 2014. The two teams split in 2013 and 2012, and ESU's last series win over the Marauders came with a sweep in 2010. ESU has had some recent success at Cooper Park, splitting doubleheaders in 2021, 2019 and 2017.
