MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - A beat up Millersville Marauders wrestling team could not overcome the absence of three starters in falling to visiting Franklin & Marshall in Friday's Battle for the Rupp Cup.
F&M totaled 13 points in the three matches without Millersville's starters. Millersville's victories came from
Devin Flannery at 133 pounds,
Jonathan Parrilla at 157 pounds and
Brandon Connor at 165 pounds.
F&M improved to 8-1 in duals while Millersville's record dropped to 4-8.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Flannery improved to 13-4 by winning a sudden victory thriller over Pat Phillips in the second bout of the night. Flannery fell behind 2-0 early, and trailed 3-2 with less than a minute to wrestle in the final period. Flannery scored a takedown to take a lead, but Phillips owned 1:04 in riding time, and the extra point sent the match into sudden victory overtime. Early in the overtime, Flannery won a scramble and looped around Phillips for a 6-4 win.
• Parrilla scored Millersville's second win, topping Chase McCollum, 9-2. Parrilla earned at least one takedown in each period. He escaped to start the third and hit a takedown for a seven-point advantage. But Parrilla had not accumulated enough riding time for the bonus points, and McCollum managed to neutralize Parrilla late in the match to avoid the major decision.
• With
Anthony Yacovetti sidelined at 174,
Brandon Connor slid back into the lineup at 165 while Guy DeLeonardis bumped up a weight class. Connor delivered a convincing 14-4 major decision over Anthony Micci that pulled Millersville to within 14-10 in the team score. Connor hit a four-point nearfall in both the first and second periods. He continued to press in the third period in an effort to land a technical fall, but his aggressiveness was used against him late as Micci scored a takedown to put the margin at 10. Connor's win improved him 17-10 on the season.
• Up a weight class, DeLeonardis battled but was out-matched by James Conway 5-0. F&M took the final two matches of the dual with a tech fall and major decision.
