Millersville's Steve Sweeney named CSC Academic All-America®

AUSTIN, Texas - Exhibiting the highest levels of performance on the football field and in the classroom, Millersville University defensive back Steve Sweeney has been named to the 2022 Academic All-America® football team selected by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).
Only 22 offensive players, 22 defensive players and eight specialists across Division II were voted to the Academic All-America® teams. Sweeney was named to the second team. He enters rare and elite company at Millersville as only the second football player and the first since Tom Burns in 1991 to be named to the prestigious team. He is the 20th Marauder overall to be named Academic All-America®.
Sweeney played the season in his first semester as a graduate student in the technology and innovation program. The prior May, he earned a bachelor's degree with a 3.82 cumulative GPA. As a three-year starter at safety, Sweeney was named All-PSAC East Second Team in 2021 and followed that with a 2022 season in which he helped the defense hold six of the final seven opponents to 20 points or fewer--a streak which led Millersville to a 5-2 finish, its most wins since 2006 and its best PSAC East record since 2000.
Sweeney led the team with three interceptions, broke up a team-high seven passes, and finished with 32 tackles. Sweeney is also a four-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete and is planning to return for his final season of eligibility with the football program in 2023.
