Marauders baseball faces West Chester in critical weekend series

| By:
  • Series: 51-89 (.364)
  • Series Streak: Millersville, 1
  • First Meeting: 1957 (L, 5-3)
  • Last Meeting: 2019 (W, 7-2 in five innings) | Game Recap

ABOUT THE GAMES

  • Both Millersville (No. 4) and West Chester (No. 6) are ranked in this week’s NCBWA Atlantic Region Poll. They are both the highest-ranked PSAC East teams appearing in the poll.
  • West Chester has not played a game since Saturday, April 3, when the team lost a pair of games to Shepherd University. The Golden Rams have only played 12 games in 2021 (8-4 overall record) and are undefeated (4-0) in their home stadium.
  • West Chester currently leads the PSAC in team batting average (.359)—but because of the lack of games played, have 202 less at-bats than Millersville, who is ranked third in team average with a .318 mark.
  • Millersville sophomore Bren Taylor’s .469 average is sixth-best in the PSAC but his 30 total hits are tied for fourth-most in the conference.
  • Millersville has won three games in a row, including two seventh-inning comebacks this week (courtesy of Mark Miller and Jimmy Losh home runs on Monday versus Shepherd and a walk-off wild pitch versus Shippensburg on Tuesday.) Millersville has won three straight games on three previous occasions in 2021 and have never pushed the streak to four consecutive wins.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

  • Six West Chester players have hit at least three home runs and the team has launched 26 total round-trippers. Luke Cantwell (.450, five HR, 21 RBIs) leads the team in both homers and runs batted in. Despite the lack of games played compared to most teams in the conference, WCU trails Shepherd by just eight home runs for most in the PSAC.
  • Mike Ferrera leads the Golden Rams in average (.471) and doubles (six) and is tied for second-most on the team in homers (four) with Nick D’Amore.
  • Braeden Fausnaught has been West Chester’s most successful starting pitcher. In three starts, he has a 3.50 ERA in a team-high 16 innings pitched, 18 strikeouts, and a 1-0 record.
Look at the schedule and we’ve played 18 games to this point. Realistically we usually get to that number in early March most years. We’re still just learning our team, learning our arms, and our young players are learning how to win. So we’re starting to click at the right time."
Jon Shehan, head coach
