West Chester rallies for game one win; Millersville bounces back in shortened game two

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - For the second day in a row, Millersville and West Chester split a PSAC East doubleheader. West Chester rallied from a 7-0 deficit to win 11-10 in the 10th inning of game one. Millersville bounced back and evened the four-game series with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap, which was stopped after five innings because of darkness.

GAME ONE (WEST CHESTER 11, MILLERSVILLE 10 (10 INNINGS))
• A four-run first and three-run second gave Millersville an early 7-0 lead, and starter Cordell Shannon had a no-hitter through 4 1/3 and kept the shutout through 5 2/3. But the game changed with Justin Horn's two-out single in the bottom of the sixth. The next two Rams followed with singles, and Luke Cantwell hit a three-run homer to slash Millersville's lead to three.
Dominic Hardaway hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to put Millersville's lead to 9-4, but West Chester wasn't finished with its rally. This time, it was a two-out hit-by-pitch against the No. 9 hitter in the lineup that started the charge. Three singles later, Joe Zirolli hit a three-run homer that tied the game at 9-9.
• Millersville's Jimmy Cain drove in a run with a single to start extra innings, but the Marauders left the bases loaded in the inning, and that would prove costly as West Chester used a hit-by-pitch, two walks and a sacrifice fly to stay alive. The Golden Rams ended the game in the bottom of the 10th with Horn's walk-off RBI single.
• Millersville out-hit West Chester 13-10 but issued seven walks and hit two from the seventh inning on. Shannon was credited with seven runs allowed in 6 2/3, although four of those runs scored when he was out of the game in the seventh.
Luke Trainer led Millersville's lineup with five RBIs. Five Marauders had two hits each.

GAME TWO (MILLERSVILLE 7, WEST CHESTER 2 (5 INNINGS)
Cole Friese started game two with a leadoff home run, but the Marauders trailed 2-1 entering the top of the fourth. After Cain's leadoff single, a fielding error opened the door to a five-run inning that included a two-run double Jimmy Losh. Christian Del Toro's sacrifice fly in the fifth added to Millersville's lead, and after Daniel Ross shut down the Golden Rams in the fifth, play was called because of darkness.
• Ross (2-1) matched a career high with five innings pitched. He gave up two runs on four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five, which matched a career high.
• Millersville managed just three hits but benefited from five walks and four West Chester errors.

NOTES
• Shannon took a no decision for the first time after a streak of eight consecutive starts resulting in wins.
• Hardaway and Friese, who both hit home runs, are tied for the team lead with nine.
• The 10-inning game one was Millersville's longest game of the season. The Marauders are now 2-2 in extra-inning games.
• Three of Millersville's last five losses have come by one run. Millersville is the first team in the Atlantic Region to 30 wins.

UP NEXT
• Millersville hosts 27-10 and Mountain East-leading Shepherd for a nine-inning game on Tuesday. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
