MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has released its regional rankings, and the rankings include members of the Millersville men's and women's teams.
The Atlantic Regional rankings are comprised of singles players and doubles teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and independents. The ITA ranked its top 20 singles players and top 10 doubles teams in each of the NCAA's eight regions.
From the Millersville men's team, Carlos Martinez-Lucas came in at No. 10--third among PSAC athletes--and Frank Yanni landed at No. 20. Martinez-Lucas and Yanni, who teamed to win the PSAC Doubles Championship in the fall, were ranked No. 3 in the doubles rankings behind Charleston's John Giesberts and Marshall Dagostine and Mercyhurst's David Akinpetide and Milan Jankovic. The Millersville duo went 7-2 in the fall with their lone losses coming to a Division I team from Morgan State and the No. 2-ranked Mercyhurst team.
In singles, Martinez-Lucas posted a 6-4 record while finishing as the PSAC runner-up. Yanni, playing in the No. 2 flight, went 5-6. His fall included four wins in the ITA Regional and a three-set, tiebreaker loss to Edinboro's Bruno Sabio, who is ranked No. 8 in the rankings.
On the women's side, Julie Wallace and Noelle Htwar earned a No. 9 ranking in doubles. That pairing posted a 5-4 record in the fall. Of the losses, one came against region's No. 2-ranked team in the PSAC Semifinals and one against the No. 8 team. The other two came against players ranked in the top three in the East Region singles rankings. Wallace and Htwar won the ITA Regional Tournament consolation bracket earlier in the fall, winning three-straight matches.
The Millersville women's season resumes on Feb. 19 against Franklin & Marshall at the Hempfield Rec Center. The men's season picks up play on Feb. 27 against Franklin & Marshall.
