MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville men's tennis team played its first dual of the 2021-22 season Wednesday and scored a 5-2 victory over visiting District of Columbia (UDC).
Millersville improved its all-time record against UDC to 4-0, with all four meetings coming since the spring of 2019.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
• Fresh off a PSAC Doubles Championship, Carlos Martinez-Lucas and Frank Yanni teamed for a 6-4 win in the No. 1 doubles flight, improving their record to 7-2 on the young season. UDC scored a 7-5 win the No. 2 doubles spot, but short one player, UDC was forced to default at No. 3 doubles, giving the point and an early edge to Millersville.
• Millersville took three of the five contested singles matches, and depth proved key for the Marauders, who won flights three, four and five. Zicheng Zeng knocked off Martinez-Lucas, the PSAC individual runner-up, 6-3, 6-1. Louis Mangeon got by Frank Yanni 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 2 slot. But the tide turned for Millersville at No. 3 where Santiago Ramos won a tightly-contested 7-6, 7-5 decision. Brandon Caban and Dylan Tull both outlasted their opponents, winning in three sets.
REACTION FROM COACH MATT HELSEL
• On the team's performance in its first dual: "It was a good outing for our first head-to-head match of the year. It was a stern test from a short-handed team that came to fight. Frank and Carlos did ag reat job of preserving the doubles point for us. In singles, we got to showcase our depth. UDC played two great matches at one and two singles and were very competitive on the other courts too. But our depth carried us through. Santiago, Dylan and Brandon were all pushed hard, but they were ultimately able to finish, and that's a great sign.
