Strong starts from Jeff Taylor and Alex Mykut propel Marauders to sweep

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – On a sunny but brisk Sunday afternoon the Millersville Marauders baseball team swept a pair of games from Goldey-Beacom College by scores of 10-1 and 6-0.

The Marauders pitching staff received strong starts from Jeff Taylor in game one and Alex Mykut in game two. Taylor earned his second win of the season after tossing five innings and surrendering three hits, an earned run, and striking out three. Mykut worked a lightning-quick pace and went six innings, allowing only one hit, one walk, no earned runs, and striking out 11 Goldey-Beacom batters. Mykut's win was his first of 2020 and the first of his Millersville career.

The Marauders have won eight of their last nine games and got great production from the bottom of the lineup in today's doubleheader. Seven-hole Manning Brookens had two hits in game one (including a triple) and finished with a run scored and an RBI. Out of the eight spot, Corey Woodcock had three hits between the two games, two runs scored, two RBIs, and two stolen bases (including a swipe of home in the bottom of the second inning.)

Nick Mancuso spent both games in the nine-spot but came through with two hits, four RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

GAME ONE (MILLERSVILLE 10, GOLDEY-BEACOM 1)
• Millersville put up five runs in the bottom of the second inning to create a comfortable lead. Luke Trainer led off the inning with a single to right-center. A Jimmy Cain single and a Darin Miller walk loaded the bases, and Manning Brookens brought in Trainer for the first run of the game after a single to right field. The hit parade continued with Corey Woodcock singling to center to drive in Cain, then Nick Mancuso socking a 2-run single to plate Brookens and Miller. Woodcock advanced to third base on Mancuso's hit, and two batters later, he broke for home plate, avoided the tag, and stole home to make it a 5-0 game.
• Goldey-Beacom led off the top of the fourth inning with a Tevin Thomas home run to make it only a four-run game, but the Marauders responded in the bottom half of the frame. A Woodcock single and a Mancuso walk got things started, and a double steal put both runners in scoring position. Cole Friese drew a walk to load up the bases once again, then Eric Callahan brought in Woodcock with a sacrifice fly to left field. Jimmy Losh stepped in and smoked a 2-out, 2-run triple down the right field line that rattled around in the corner and plated Friese and Mancuso. That clutch hit chased Goldey-Beacom starter Bailey Spence from the game, and Losh would later score on a wild pitch to make it a 9-0 game.
• The large Marauders lead once again allowed young players to get some at-bats. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Tyler Wright entered the game, walked, and advanced to third base after two wild pitches. Another substitute, Chase Simmons, smacked a single to right field to bring Wright in and secure the 10-1 victory.

GAME TWO (MILLERSVILLE 6, GOLDEY-BEACOM 0)
• Game two of the doubleheader was scoreless after three complete innings, but that all changed in the bottom of the fourth. Jimmy Losh led off the inning with a walk, a Luke Trainer single advanced him to third, and a Jimmy Cain single let him come home for the first run of the game. Darin Miller walked to load the bases, Corey Woodcock launched a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Trainer, then Nick Mancuso once again came through in the clutch with a two-out, two-run double on a 3-2 count. Mancuso later scored in the inning on an Eric Callahan RBI single to push the lead to five runs.
• The only other Millersville run came in the bottom of the fifth inning after Losh led off the frame with a single to left center and was later driven in by a Darin Miller RBI single to right field.

POST-GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JON SHEHAN
• On Alex Mykut's game two performance: "He's got really good rhythm and great mound presence, which is something that's changed from last year. He's maturing very well. He threw a lot of strikes and got ahead of a lot of hitters. He gets a lot of swings and misses; his stuff is hard to make contact with."

• On using the DH spot in the nine-hole for strategic reasons: "I really like using the DH role as one of those things that can be fluid in the game. We've got a lot of guys on the bench that have a lot of different tools. Nick Mancuso was in there today and it worked but there might be situations where Bren Taylor might need to put a ball in play or Tyler Wright might need to drag or get a bunt down so we're able to play the situations and use that DH spot.

• On the upcoming week and five games at Cooper Park: "This week is big. We saved five or six really good bullpen arms and some of our stoppers didn't even throw this weekend. We love the fact we're playing midweek. Kris Pirozzi's looked so much better and has thrown 75-80% strikes and Ben Wilchacky has been as advertised with his work midweek and his last outing. We're looking forward to seeing those two start and take the next step and the bullpen's ready to rock and roll. We like playing midweek because of the depth of our staff. The more that we can play the better off we're going to be. We have the arms to do it, and getting more at-bats for our hitters is never bad from a consistency standpoint."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
• Sophomore Jimmy Losh added three more hits today for a season total of 21 and improved his batting average to .477. That is a team-high mark, as is Losh's 17 runs scored (three today) and seven stolen bases.
• Junior Luke Trainer also earned three hits combined between the two games and is tied for the team-lead in RBIs with freshman Darin Miller (13)
• The Marauders finished the day with three triples (two from Losh and one from Manning Brookens.)

NOTES
• Alex Mykut's 11 strikeouts were a career high. His 0.66 ERA is lowest amongst the Millersville starting pitching staff.
• Jeff Taylor's 1.89 ERA is second-lowest amongst that same group. He and Mykut are tied for the team-high in strikeouts with 26.
• Darin Miller has reached base in 11 consecutive games.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders host a doubleheader with Felician University that was rescheduled for this Tuesday, March 3 beginning at 12 p.m. at Cooper Park on the campus of Millersville University. The two teams have only met twice before (in 2003), and split a doubleheader with scores of 11-10 (a Ville win) and 6-4 (a Felician win.) The Golden Falcons are 1-3 so far in 2020.
