MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - For the third year in a row, student-athletes, coaches and staff of the Millersville Athletics department teamed up with Lancaster Recreation Commission to make Thanksgiving possible for local families in need.
Millersville Athletics has partnered with Lancaster Rec for several years not only with the adopt-a-family program but also providing free athletic clinics annually for Lancaster youth. In recent weeks, Lancaster Rec identified eight families who could use assistance with Thanksgiving dinner. Participation in the program was more challenging than in years past with many student-athletes living away from campus, but women's basketball, track and field, baseball, softball, swimming, the athletic trainers, and athletic administration all helped families.
The teams and staff members shopped for and purchased food and household items then delivered those goods to the homes.
"Doing the adopt-a-family program is so rewarding," said softball player Faith Willenbrock. "During this time of year it is easy to get caught up with everything going on, so adopt-a-family helps us take a step back and be thankful for what we have by helping someone else. I like how we get to shop for and deliver the food ourselves and meet the family. We have had the same family two years in a row, and they are an absolute joy! Seeing how much this small act of kindness can impact someone means more to me then any win, or stat ever could. Serving others reflects our team's core values, and I am proud to be part of a team that makes helping the local community a priority."
