Marauders prove resilient in ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University women's tennis team competed in the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament this past weekend, held at the home of the Marauders, McComsey Tennis Courts.
It was a strong showing for Millersville, with nine athletes competing in singles and doubles action total. Every player on the roster secured at least one victory.
Millersville's Esperanza Contador, freshman Hannah Bryan and freshman Julie Wallace all competed in the championship singles bracket. Victoria Hanus, Corinne Grohoski, Maria Ojeda, Kelsey Heckert, Lauren Weaver and Jasmine Morris competed in singles B Draw.
TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
• Julie Wallace, competing in the first tournament of her college career, had one of the strongest showings of anyone on the team. Playing in the championship bracket, the freshman won her first two matches, including a victory against Indiana (Pa.)'s Julia Newman, the tournament's No. 5 seed, 7-6, 3-7, 12-10.
• Wallace's first match was a marathon, too. She won in three sets against West Virginia-Wesleyan's Rebecca Osborne, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 10-5.
• Esperanza Contador lost her first championship singles matchup but bounced back in a big way, defeating No. 6 Viola Lugmayr from Slippery Rock in straight sets, 4-2, 4-2. Contador lost her next match in straight sets.
• Hannah Bryan dropped her first set in championship singles, but also proved resilient. The freshman took down Carleyah McLean from West Liberty in straight sets in her first back-draw match, then advanced to the quarterfinals via walkover.
• Kelsey Heckert had a successful tournament in the B Draws, winning three matches to reach the quarterfinals. In a bracket that opened with 46 players, Heckert was in the final eight.
• The combination of Jasmine Morris and Maria Ojeda was Millersville's most successful doubles team, winning two matches to advance to the B Draw quarterfinals.
• Morris had a solid tournament in B Draw singles. Despite falling in her first match, she bounced back to win two back-draw matches.
• Victoria Hanus secured a straight sets victory in her opening singles match of the tournament.
• Corrine Grohoski, Lauren Weaver and Maria Ojeda all secured back-draw victories.

• The Marauders will compete in the PSAC Individual Championships at Bloomsburg University on Saturday, Oct. 5.
