JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Millersville baseball suffered a 7-1 loss to Bloomsburg early Friday and then was bounced from the PSAC Tournament in the late game when California mounted a late-inning rally to get past the Marauders, 11-9.
It marks the first time since 1989--and the first time in the modern format--that Millersville lost back-to-back PSAC Tournament games. It was also the first time since 2012 that Millersville did not win at least two games in the PSAC Tournament. Millersville finished the tournament with a 38-14 overall record. West Chester and Bloomsburg remain in the winner's bracket while Seton Hill and Cal U are left with one loss apiece.
GAME ONE (BLOOMSBURG 7, MILLERSVILLE 1)
•
Jimmy Cain's single up the middle brough
Cole Friese home to put Millersville in front in the top of the first inning. Millersville starting pitcher
Cordell Shannon entered the game 7-0 in eight career postseason starts and 5-0 in his career against Bloomsburg. But the first two batters in the bottom of the first singled. A walk loaded the bases, and Ben Newbert hit a grand slam over the left field wall.
• While Shannon (9-3) rebounded to keep Bloomsburg scoreless over the next six innings, the offense could not mount a charge against Casey Cooperman (7-3). The All-PSAC East First Team selection held the Marauders without a run over the next six innings before handing the ball to relievers Trey Hinkle and Zach Newmeyer. Both held the Marauders without a hit in the final two innings.
• Millersville put a runner on base seven of the final eight innings. Two of the innings were ended with double plays. Bloomsburg added three runs on three walks an error and one single in the eighth.
• Cain went 3-for-4 with the team's lone RBI.
Luke Trainer accounted for two hits and
Kaylor Kulina singled and walked in four plate appearances.
GAME TWO (CALIFORNIA 11, MILLERSVILLE 9)
•
Eli Nabholz matched a career high with 12 strikeouts, holding Cal U to two runs over seven innings, and helping Millersville build an 8-2 lead through seven.
Ben Snyder hit a solo home run in the fourth.
Nick Graham hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and
Eric Callahan's two-run homer in the seventh gave Millersville the six-run lead.
• The Marauders couldn't keep the lead, however. In the top of the eighth, Cal U used a single, hit-batsman and walk to load the bases. Kristian Webb singled in two cut Millersville's lead to four.
Tyler Yankosky entered with the bases loaded and one out and struck out two to end the inning. In the ninth, however, Yankosky walked two and hit a batter to load the bases. The Marauders called
Bobby Dorta from the bullpen, but Nico Marchetti immediately singled up the middle, pushing two runs home. PSAC West Player of the Year Eric Fairman then reached on an error, loading the bases. Two batters later, Cal U cut Millersville's lead to one on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch brought the tying run home. Another walk loaded the bases and a double scored two more. Cal U capped its seven-run inning with another double. The runs came on just three hits. Millersville walked two, hit a batter, committed two errors and a wild pitch. All four runs surrendered by Dorta were unearned.
•
Dominic Hardaway doubled in Snyder in the bottom of the ninth to bring Millersville to within 11-9. Hunter Robison, however, notched his fourth save of the season with a strike out to end it.
• Graham reached base four times and scored twice in his first career postseason start. He was hit once, drew a walk, hit a home run and singled.
WHAT COACH JON SHEHAN HAD TO SAY
• "The message to the team is to step on somebody. We had multiple opportunities. We screwed up fundamentally on the base paths. We screwed up fundamentally offensively at the plate with situational hitting three times. We had a chance to put a team away tonight and we didn't do it. We went out and threw balls. We had three cross-ups in the last inning--hit-by-pitches, walks and errors. That's a recipe for giving up nine runs in two innings. The bullpen did not throw enough strikes. We did not do a good job put them away."
• "You have to learn from your mistakes and you have to have a short memory. We have to do a good job of figuring out what we need to improve on and then have a short memory and not dwell on the negative. We have a short game and the biggest games of the year are right around the corner."
