Lock Haven, Pa. - Freshman Frank Yanni of the Millersville University men's tennis team has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. Yanni is the first Marauder since Jody Sambrick Jr. in 2015 to receive the honor.
Yanni went 2-0 in doubles on the week, teaming up with Rodrigo Lorencin for a 6-3 win at flight two doubles in Millersville's 6-1 win over Kutztown on April 6. It was the Marauders' first win over the Golden Bears since the 1998-99 season, and Yanni's 6-1, 7-5 victory at flight three singles also contributed to the win. Yanni and Lorencin also won a very close 7-6 (8-6) battle at flight two doubles against Chestnut Hill on April 7. Yanni still played well in his lone loss of the week, a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 defeat at flight three singles against the Griffins.
Although Yanni is the first men's player to receive the honor in four seasons, Katina Jones and Kelsey Heckert also earned PSAC East Athlete of the Week honors earlier this season.
Yanni and the rest of the Marauders are back in action when they host Virginia State University on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. on the McComsey Tennis Courts.
