MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville and Bloomsburg traded blows for four quarter, but the hidden yards on special teams, two Huskies' field goals and a final hold as the Marauders drove looking to take the lead in the final minutes were the difference in the 26-21 Bloomsburg victory.
Bloomsburg (4-5, 3-3 PSAC) has now won three consecutive games and Saturday was its seventh game decided by 15 points or fewer. Millersville dropped to 2-7 (1-5 PSAC) with the loss.
Millersville quarterback
Collin Shank returned after a two-week absence and completed 23-of-37 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns--two of which went to true freshman
Jon Haynes. Shank's counterpart, Logan Lieby completed 16-of-27 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns but did major damage with his legs, rushing for 76 yards, including a back-breaking third-down conversion with just over a minute to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Millersville erased a 14-7 halftime deficit with a 77-yard touchdown pass from Shank to
Kevon Newerls with 11:40 left in the third quarter. Bloomsburg answered with 4:36 left in the period on a four-yard toss from Leiby to Michael Allen. The extra point missed, giving Bloomsburg a 20-14 advantage. Just over three minutes later, however, the Marauders marched 74 yards in eight plays, using a 24-yard rush by
Evan Morrill as well as five Shank completions. The final play that put the Marauders up 21-20 was a 17-yard strike to Haynes in which Shank eluded the rush, stepped up to the line of scrimmage of squeezed a pass between a pair of defenders.
• From there, special teams proved key for both teams. Bloomsburg responded with a drive to the Millersville 30, but the Marauders' defense held on second-and-four and third-and-four, forcing a 47-yard field goal attempt that Cameron Schollenberger converted. The ensuing kickoff was fielded by Millersville's
Chris Dolan at the one, but it was bobbled into the end zone. Dolan picked it up and scrambled for a return but was quickly brought down at the six. Millersville could not convert a third-and-two, and the punt failed to flip the field as it traveled just 26 yards, setting up Bloomsburg at the Millersville 40. The Huskies pushed to the Millersville 20 before the Marauders forced another field goal try, and Schollenberger was true from 36, giving the Huskies a 26-20 advantage.
• Millersville's next drive started on its own 17, and after a 10-yard catch by Newerls on first down, the Marauders' next three plays lost two yards. The punt that followed was a 21-yarder, giving Bloomsburg prime field position at the Millersville 46.
• The Marauders' defense was helped by a Bloomsburg holding call on first down, and the Huskies picked up two yards on the next three snaps. The punt from Jaco Sattamini pinned the Marauders at the 11, and a holding penalty back them up to the five. Millersville found its rhythm quickly with Shank hitting on consecutive passes.
Bryan Malone took a handoff for 14 yards and then pulled in a nine-yard catch to the Millersville 49. But Malone and a Bloomsburg player were dinged on the play, resulting in a lengthy injury timeout. On the next snap, Millersville's
K.J. Cartwright rushed into Bloomsburg territory but was also downed with an injury. The injuries seemed to slow the Marauders' momentum. After a pass for a one-yard loss, Shank missed on his next three attempts, and Millersville turned the ball over on downs with 1:51 to play.
• Millersville had three timeouts to stop the clock and promptly stuffed Bloomsburg's Khalil Nelson on first and second down. But on third, with Millersville clogging the interior, Leiby ran a play-action bootleg to the Bloomsburg sideline and sprinted into wide open spaces for 33 yards for the game-clinching first down.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Bloomsburg held a 412-371 advantage in total yards. The Huskies rushed for 202 and passed for 210. Millersville threw for 307 and rushed for 64.
• Haynes led the Marauders with eight catches and 90 yards--the most catches by a Millersville true freshman since 2014. It was also the first two-touchdown game by a Marauder true freshman since 2014.
Evan Morrill added five catches for 52 yards and rushed three times for 27. Newerls totaled three catches for 98 and his 77-yard reception in the third was the longest by a Marauder since Matt Egenreider's 87-yard catch against Assumption in 2010.
•
Christian Martir led Millersville with 11 tackles and added a half-sack. Isaiah Onsuchak made nine tackles, forced a fumble and recorded his sixth sack of the season before exiting with an injury in the fourth quarter.
Chase Alisauckas also recorded a sack.
Tyler Patron-Penn intercepted a pass on Bloomsburg's final drive of the first half.
COACH J.C. MORGAN'S THOUGHTS
•
On what happened on the final two drives: "We had a chance at the end and that's all you could ask for. We just couldn't get it done. It was unfortunate. We had our opportunities on the last couple of drives and couldn't connect for various reasons. We had two shots to win."
•
On positives from the game: "The confidence that our team had this week, through everything that has happened, we thought we could come out, put a game together and be in position to win. At halftime our spirits were high. We were in a competitive game. That's good for us moving forward. But today, it's disapointing that we couldn't get it done. Giving the ball to them in deep territory and having a defense step up was good. We talk about playing team football. The kids kept fighting and I'm proud of them for that but we need to take a look at what we need to do to come out on top next time."
•
On learning how to win: "It comes with experience. We are getting those experiences. We had that at Pace in week one. This is week nine. The only way to grow from these experiences is to see the moment, see what we did right and what we did wrong and learn."
NOTES
• In his last two games, Shank has completed 47-of-66 passes (.712) for 716 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception.
• Onuschak is seven tackles shy of becoming the fifth Marauder since 2000 to total 100 in a season. His six sacks are tied for the most by a Marauder since 2001.
