THE MATCH-UP
• Millersville hosts the nation's leading passer in Tyson Bagent and the nation's No. 2-ranked passing offense on Homecoming Saturday. Since the opening of Biemesderfer Stadium, Millersville is 23-24-1 in Homecoming games, but it has won just one of those games in the last six years. Shepherd enters the game with a perfect 3-0 road record, winners of three in a row and fresh off a 35-23 win over No. 12 West Chester.Â
• Millersville should have quarterback
Collin Shank back under center this week after he missed last week's game. Shank has had much luck with injuries, especially following PSAC East Athlete of the Week awards. The first time he won it in 2017, he was lost for the season in the second quarter of the very next game against Cal U. He won the award two weeks ago after breaking the school record for total offense against Lock Haven and then was injured in practice. Both times, Shank threw for 400 yards before being injured. Against Shippensburg,
Miles Miller earned his second career start in Shank's place and threw for a career-high 204 yards on 18-of-41 pass attempts. It was the first time a Marauder had 40 or more attempts since Shank's athlete of the week performance in 2017. In six games, Shank has completed 72-of-119 (.650) passes with eight touchdowns to just three interceptions. He ranks seventh in the PSAC in completion percentage and fifth in efficiency.Â
• Millersville has played eight true freshmen and 12 first-year players on offense this season. Seven of the true freshmen have earned starts.Â
•
Isaiah Onuschak is the PSAC leader with 11.3 tackles per game. He has recorded at least 12 in each of the last four games and has double-digit tackles in six of seven games. He also has a tackle for loss in six of seven games. His five sacks are tied for fifth in the PSAC. He also forced a fumble in three of the last four games.Â
•
Zac Button is now tied for 11th in the PSAC in tackles for loss with 7 1/2. He tallied two against Shippensburg and has at least a half-tackle for loss in six of seven games.Â
•
Evan Morrill has caught a pass in 25 consecutive games and led the team in receiving three times this season. His 99 yards against Lock Haven were a career high as were the two touchdown passes he caught in the game.Â
• Millersville's secondary will face a stiff challenge with Shepherd's passing game Saturday, and the Marauders have picked off just three passes this year--the fewest in the PSAC. Millersville picked off 16 passes and finished just three off the PSAC lead in 2018. For the second year in a row, however, Millersville led the PSAC in passing defense in 2018 but ranks 13th in 2019.Â
ABOUT THE RAMS
• Shepherd is still very much in the chase of the PSAC East title but will need some help after falling to Kutztown 34-27 on Sept. 28. Since then, the Rams have scored at least 32 points in each of the last three games. Last week, the Rams threw for 413 yards and rushed for 116 against West Chester. The week prior against Shippensburg, the Rams totaled 510 yards of offense. The week before that against Lock Haven, the Rams rushed for a season-high 340 yards and six touchdowns on 40 carries. That was the only game in which Shepherd has not passed for over 300 yards. The Rams have topped 400 yards passing twice.Â
• Bagent leads Division II in passing average at 387.5 yards per game. He's completed 70.08 percent of his passes and has 16 touchdowns to eight interceptions. He has thrown two interceptions in each of the last three games. Eight players have caught a touchdown pass. Dylan Brewer is Bagent's favorite target with 54 catches but Devin Phelps leads the team with six touchdowns. Brewer is the PSAC leader in catches.Â
• Shepherd may rely on its passing game, but Deonte Glover ranks sixth in the PSAC in rushing average, totaling 532 yards thorough seven games.Â
• Shepherd has allowed 25.7 points per game, which is seventh in the PSAC. It ranks eight in total defense, fourth against the pass and seventh against the run.Â
THE LAST TIME OUT
•
MILLERSVILLE (at Shippensburg (L, 0-27)): With freshman
Miles Miller making his second career start, the Marauder offense struggled to get going. All six of Millersville's first half drives ended with punts and they managed just three first downs in the half.Â
•
SHEPHERD (#12 West Chester (W, 35-23)): Tyson Bagent threw for 413 yards and three touchdowns in the upset of West Chester. The score was 28-23 with just over nine minutes left to play, but Shepherd scored just 43 seconds later to put the win away.Â
