Staten Island, N.Y. - The Millersville women's track and field team competed against a deep field including athletes from all three NCAA divisions at Friday's NYC Gotham Cup. Sunflower Greene won both the weight throw and the shot put, setting a new PSAC record and two meet records in the process. The Marauders also picked up three new PSAC Championships qualifiers.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS
• The Millersville throwers took the spotlight once again as three Marauders finished in the top 10 in the shot put and two placed in the top seven in the weight throw. Greene hit 64-10 1/2 in the weight throw, which shattered her previous PSAC record of 63-7. It was a meet record toss, besting a mark that had stood since 2016. The mark also moved Greene to No. 4 in Division II this season. Madison Martin placed seventh at 51-8 1/2.
• Greene won the shot put with a mark of 51-1. Aliyah Striver topped her PR by seven inches, hitting 44-5 1/2 to place as the runner-up. Striver's best landed just 2 1/2 inches shy of a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The mark also put Striver second in Millersville history behind only Greene. Reunisha Williams placed 10th with a toss of 37-10 3/4.
• Destinee Holloman posted her best time of the season in the 60-meter dash, running a 7.93 for a seventh-place finish in a field of 79 runners. Holloman was the No. 2 Division II runner in the field. Holloman added a career best and PSAC Championships qualifying mark of 17-6 in the long jump, which placed her fifth out of 48 competitors and first among Division II athletes. Teammate Brianna Doherty placed ninth with a leap of 17-0.
• Freshman Patricia Davis posted a personal best and qualified for the PSAC Championships in the triple jump with a leap of 33-11 1/2. She finished second out of 33 jumpers, placing behind only Villanova's Alexandra Patrick, who jumped 35-1.
• The Marauders picked up a PSAC Championships qualifier in the 200-meter dash. Emonie Reviere ran a 26.22, placing 11th, and freshman Gabriela Karch ran a 26.67 to place 18th.
• Lenaiya Flowers narrowly missed a personal best in the 400-meter dash but still managed to post the second-fastest time by a PSAC runner this season with a 58.72. She placed 18th out of 101 runners, and among Division II runners, she was topped only by four.
• In the 1,000-meter run--a non-PSAC Championships event--freshman Skylar Maurer ran a 3:21.63 to place 23rd in a field of 33.
COACH ANDY YOUNG QUOTES
• "Aliyah had a great day in the shot. She has been doing lots of little things to get better. She is so close to an NCAA qualifying mark. She will hit something really big very soon we think."
• "Destinee had a disappointing break as far as training went, but she seems to be making up for it right now. Her motivation has seemed to change which is exciting to see. She could be a force in our conference."
• "Our distance squad is slowly developing. We have some work to do and are aiming at getting them ready for outdoors. This was their first test of fitness today."
NOTES
• Since the start of the 2017-18 indoor season, Greene has finished first in the shot put in 16 of 18 meets. She finished runner-up in the other two meets--the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships and the 2018 outdoor Bucknell Bison Open where she finished behind a non-NCAA athlete.
• Striver moved up to No. 2 in the PSAC in the shot put and has finished in the top three of all three meets this season. Martin ranks second in the PSAC in the weight throw
• At 17-6, Holloman and Doherty share the team's best mark in the long jump.
• The Marauders now have three runners qualified for 200-meter dash at the PSAC Indoor Championships.
