Erie, Pa. – The Millersville University women's golf squad shot a 346 for an 11th-place finish in the 20-team field at the Michael Corbett Fall Classic hosted by Gannon University. The teams were limited to just one round as Monday's second round was canceled due to rain.
From the day one totals, the field had an average score of 90.70, and three Marauders were below that number.
TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
• Senior Danielle Greene and sophomore Hannah Yanoski paced the Marauders by shooting rounds of 11-over 83. Greene went 4-over through a nine-hole span including two bogeys and a double bogey. Greene finished the tournament in a tie for 22nd, nine strokes back of tournament champion Alice Putoud from Tiffin. Yanoski's round was her first of the season.
• With a 12-shot improvement from the final round at the Evann Parker Memorial Tournament, freshman Alexandra Craig was Millersville's third-place finisher with 16-over 88. Craig finished in a tied for 52nd.
• Junior Joelie Bennett shot a 20-over 92 which placed her in a tie for 67th place. Bennett posted one run of seven consecutive pars.
• Freshman Cassandra Vogel improved by six shots from her two rounds at the Mercyhurst Invitational as she shot an 100. She finished tied for 90th in the 106-player field.
HEAD COACH SCOTT VANDEGRIFT QUOTES
• "Most of the team improved on day one, especially Alexandra Craig. Both of our freshmen played better. Hannah and Danielle's play improved. They were very close to having very good rounds. I have no doubt that the players who would have competed today would have improved. Each day we were improving, so mission accomplished. The scores do not reflect what I am seeing."
• "One person that showed the most improvement was Alexandra Craig. I think she was excited to play college golf. I definitely think it settled in for her yesterday, and her talent is really starting to come out. I know the next time we compete she is going to be that and more. I expect her to play very well from here on."
• "The three upperclassmen, if we can figure out how to avoid mistakes next time, are going to start to shine. I think we are right on track with what we are trying to accomplish. The other freshman, Cassandra Vogel, has become much more comfortable. There are some things that are going to need improving, but she is amenable to be taught by me. It will be two weeks before we play again, I think by the time we tee it up we will start to show remarkable improvement."
NOTES
• Yanoski tied for third in par 4 scoring at 4.30 while Greene averaged 4.6.
• Greene led the team on par 5 scoring going 1-over.
• Yanoski fired a total of 10 pars while Bennett and Greene behind by one.
• Craig claimed a new collegiate 18-hole best with an 88.
