ABOUT THE MARAUDERS
• Coming off a doubleheader sweep of Shippensburg, Millersville can continue to push toward first place in the PSAC East with a successful series against Mansfield, beginning with two home games on Friday. The Marauders are a beat up team right now, however. Kaylor Kulina, who ranks second on the team in hitting (.346), missed both games against Shippensburg. Ted Williams and his .313 average and .455 OBP left game two against Shippensburg. The bench depth is also limited because of injuries, and the Marauders were so thin that reliever Bobby Dorta played second base for the final five innings of the Shippensburg finale.
• Still, Millersville has gone 8-2 over its last 10 games. It has done so by winning close games. Four of the last five games and six of the last seven wins have been decided by one run. That stretch includes two extra-inning wins and two walk-off wins.
• Despite its 17-9 record, it is evident that Millersville has yet to put it all together. After starting 9-7, Millersville has gone 8-2 and its pitching has improved dramatically in the last 10 games. Its hitting, however, has dropped off just as dramatically. In the first 16 games, Millersville's pitchers had a 5.67 ERA with 80 walks in 128 2/3 innings (0.62 walks per inning). But over the last 77 innings, the staff owns a 2.69 ERA with just 34 walks (0.44 walks per inning). Strikeouts have also jumped from 0.97 per inning to 1.1 per inning. Millersville has held teams to three runs or fewer in eight of those 10 games.
• The bats, however, are a different story. The Marauders hit .296 with a .413 team OBP and .455 team slugging percentage in the first 16 games, but the numbers have dropped to .236/.331/.283 in the last 10 games. The Marauders have just 11 extra base hits and only one homer in that span. They have struck out 71 times while drawing just 39 walks.
• Ben Snyder piled up 24 RBIs in the team's first 13 games but has just two in the last 13. The team's average with runners in scoring position over the last 13 games is .225, and of the 25 hits in 111 chances, Manning Brookens is 7 for 14.
• Jimmy Cain has raised his batting average by .56 points over his last 12 games. He is 13 for 38 with nine RBIs in that stretch.
• After stealing six bases in game two Wednesday, Millersville ranks third in the PSAC in stolen bases, stealing 44 in 52 attempts. The only team more efficient is California (Pa.), which has 53 steals in 58 chances.
SERIES HISTORY
• Millersville had swept three consecutive season series and won 14 in a row before Mansfield took games two and four of last season's series. The 2017 series included two low-scoring games at Millersville and a pair of blowouts at Mansfield. In the series opener (4/1/2017), Eli Nabholz threw a no-hitter for the Marauders. He struck out six but Mansfield still managed a run on a walk and two hit batsmen. Five of his innings were 1-2-3. Two of the six no-hitters thrown by Millersville pitchers have come against Mansfield. The other was from Brett Rhoades in 2007.
• Evan McAndrew and Tyler Guidos combined to hold Millersville to one run in game two. Ben Snyder, Ted Williams and Cole Friese all hit homers in a 12-5 game three win over Luke Hils. Millersville's Cordell Shannon gave up five runs in 3 2/3. Millersville was shut out by Tanner Klein in a 13-0 game four loss.
• Shannon is 1-1 in his career against Mansfield. As a freshman in 2016, he threw a complete game three-hitter, allowing just one unearned run.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
• Mansfield plays Lock Haven Thursday before coming to Millersville but had lost four in a row prior to Thursday's doubleheader.
• Mansfield's pitching numbers are skewed because of three games against Rockhurst, Slippery Rock and Northwood in which it gave up a total of 60 runs and 65 hits. Outside of that, Mansfield has allowed three or fewer runs three times and struck out seven or more 13 times.
• Offensively, Mansfield has scored more than five runs once in its last six games. Still, Colby Schearer is tied for 10th in the PSAC in batting average at .397. He's hit three triples and three homers. Tyler Guidos is a do-it-all player for the Mountaineers. He boasts a .382 average and .462 OBP while also making seven appearances on the mound, owning a 3-2 record.
