Pittsburg, Kan. - The 2017-18 indoor track and field season has been an historic one for Millersville University junior Sunflower Greene. And at NCAA Division II Indoor Championships she has a chance to make it all the more memorable. Greene is set to compete in the weight throw and shot put with competitions starting Friday, March 9 from the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kan.
SUNFLOWER'S JOURNEY
• Greene won the PSAC Championship in both the shot put and weight throw becoming the first-ever PSAC athlete to win both events. She was Millersville's first-ever champ in the shot put and the first Marauder to win the conference title in the weight throw since Beth Lord in 2002. Greene also ranked first in the Atlantic Region in both events, which landed her the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year Award.
• Greene has continued to improve upon her qualifying marks throughout the season. Her shot put mark topped out at 52-0 at the PSAC Championships, placing her third in Division II. Her weight throw best came at the Fastrack National Invitational, and she heads into the NCAA Championships ranked eighth.
• From her first shot put event of the season to the PSAC Championships, Greene improved her best by nearly three full feet. Her weight throw mark jumped from a then-school record 54-8 1/4 to 63-3 1/4.
• Only 20 athletes qualified in shot put and 16 qualified in the weight throw. Greene is the only PSAC athlete in the weight throw and one of two in the shot put. She is also one of six athletes competing in both events. Greene's weight throw competition starts Friday, March 9 at 5:55 p.m. EST. The shot put is set for Saturday, March 10 at 6:05 p.m. EST. In the shot put, Greene will be the first thrower in the second heat. She will be sixth in the second heat of the weight throw.
HISTORY
• Greene is already a two-time All-American in the shot put after placing seventh at last year's NCAA Division II Indoor Championships and taking fourth at the outdoor championships. She is looking for her first top-eight finish in the weight throw. This is the first time she has qualified for nationals in the weight throw.
• Greene is the first Marauder thrower to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships two times and the first two qualify for two events in the same season. She joins Priscilla Jennings as the only Marauders to compete at the indoor championships two times.
• Greene has a long track record of being at her best in the biggest meets of the season. She hit her PR in the weight throw this season in a field of Division I athletes at the Fasttrack National Invitational. She did the same this season in the shot put, hitting her best of the season at the PSAC Championships. At the 2017 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, Greene launched her shot put 48-0 which was 1 1/2 feet better than her previous best. She did the same in the 2017 outdoor season, winning the PSAC shot put and weight throw titles with record throws. She bested her shot put record at the outdoor championships and finished fourth for All-America status.
