
Women’s Swimming looks to improve finish at PSAC Championships

York, Pa. – 12 Millersville swimmers are heading to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships starting on Wednesday, Feb. 21. This marks a record number of Millersville swimmers qualified for the conference championships.
Junior Gabriella Licata, sophomore Judith Miller, junior Amira Washington, sophomore Kirsten Strayer, senior Emily Fusco, freshman Leah Barrett, sophomore Mallory Dyson, sophomore Jessica Berry, sophomore Madisson Cartmill, sophomore Amanda Wetzler, freshman Alexis Shollenberger and junior Mariana Bernal are the swimmers who qualified for the championships.
"Overall, we hit 12 swimmers to conferences for the first time since l got here," said head coach Kyle Almoney. "We will have someone in each event and there are a lot of events where we can get points as well so everyone has the chance to score in some form or another which is key. As for the team we are deep in backstroke events and can score there and have others with chances to sneak in finals that are on the bubble."
On Wednesday, Bernal, Cartmill, Fusco and Licata will swim in the 200-yard individual medley. Cartmill led the team in the fastest 200 individual medley time this season (2:18.26).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Millersville will swim Barrett, Dyson, Miller, Shollenberger, Washington and Wetzler. Barrett sits at the top with the team's fastest time (25.29).
Starting off Thursday's events in the 400-yard individual medley, Berry, Cartmill and Licata is hoping to get to the finals later in the day. Cartmill led the team throughout the season with the fastest time (4:43.76).
Seven Marauders qualified in the 100-yard backstroke. The swimmers include Barrett, Cartmill, Dyson, Fusco, Shollenberger, Washington and Wetzler. The group is led by Fusco with a time of 57.10.
Millersville qualified six swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle: Barrett, Dyson, Miller, Shollenberger, Washington and Wetzler. Barrett was 0.01 away from Fusco for the fastest time in the event.
QUALIFYING JOURNEY OF THE 12 SWIMMERS
Late in the season at East Stroudsburg Invitational, Licata, Miller, Washington and Strayer recorded qualified times in their respective events. Licata was nine second faster than the time cut in the 400-yard individual medley. Miller recorded her career best 1:01.27 in the 100-yard butterfly. That time placaed Miller as the fourth fastest in school history. Washington narrowly got into the PSAC Championship by touching the wall at 25.27, 0.62 faster than the PSAC time standard. Strayer qualified for PSACs with a time of 2:23.05 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Strayer's ESU Invitational swim put her 31st fastest time in the PSAC this season in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Wetzler qualified in the middle of the season at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational. Wetzler made it into the PSAC Championships in the 100-yard backstroke by finishing with a time of 1:01.20--a second faster than the time standard. Bernal had the 28th fastest time in comparison to PSAC swimmers from her swim at the F&M Invitational with a time of 2:32.59 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Cartmill finished 2:14.60, two seconds under the PSAC time. Cartmill earned the spot in the Cedar Crest/Lock Haven home meet on Nov. 4.
Four swimmers qualified in the first tournament of the season at the California Invitational. Barrett set qualifying times in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Barrett earned the first win of her career in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25:48. Barrett touched the wall at 55.51 in the 100-yard freestyle for her second victory of the meet.
Dyson finished first in the California (Pa.) dual in the 50 free with a time of 25.42. Bernal earned another PSAC time when she finished with time of 1:11.80 by earning a spot into PSACs, four-hundredths of a second past the qualifying time. Berry claimed her PSAC time at the California (Pa.) dual on Oct. 28, tapping the wall at 19:36.18 (two seconds faster than the time standard) in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Berry ranked 23rd in the PSAC with her time.
Fusco qualified for three PSAC Championship events at the Millersville Relay Carnival. She qualified in the 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. She won the 50-yard freestyle by posting a 25:85.
"As for Emily, l just want her to compete and enjoy the moment," said Almoney. "She has done so much in four years for our program that it is awesome. l want her to leave with nothing left to prove."
This is Fusco's fourth PSAC Championships appearance. Washington will be competing in her third PSAC Championships. Berry, Cartmill, Dyson, Licata and Miller are making their second appearance.
