Mohnton, Pa. – The Millersville University women's golf team shot a 351 for third place in the seven-team field at the Alvernia Invitational which was played at Ledgerock Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
West Chester won the invitational, shooting a 327, which included Meghan O'Mara firing a 3-over 75 to win the individual medalist. In second place, Kuztown was 13-strokes back with a 340.
TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
• The Marauders were led by senior Danielle Greene and junior Joelie Bennett who combined to shoot 167. Greene carded an 11-over 83, finishing in a tie for fifth. Bennett finished the day with a 12-over 84, claiming a tie for eighth. Greene recorded six consecutive pars, starting on the par-4 first hole. Bennett posted nine pars throughout the round.
• Sophomore Hannah Yanoski finished the day with a 14-over 86, putting her in 13th place.
• The last score counted for the Marauders was freshman Alexandra Craig's 98. Craig ended up in a tie for 30th place in the 40-player field.
• Freshman Cassandra Vogel rounded the squad out, shooting a 109 to finish in 37th.
HEAD COACH SCOTT VANDEGRIFT QUOTES
• "The disadvantage for the freshmen is that they have never seen this golf course before, and it is a big golf course and the greens are extremely fast. I think it intimidated them. They gained and developed the ways of playing it to help them improve next year when they see it again."
• "The three upperclassmen, they played well. They had basic fundamental mistakes and if we clean up our mistakes and the freshmen all of a sudden click, then we can definetly be competitive for the PSAC Championships."
• "I think that [Danielle Greene] wants to really try to step it up this weekend and be in the right mindset to be there for the PSAC Championship. It is a matter of time that these three women start to break 80 and that is what is going to take us to capture the crown."
NOTES
• Greene has posted a score of 83 in the past four rounds.
• Bennett was a stroke shy of tying her season-low 83 at the Evann Parker Memorial Invitational. Bennett recorded her second top-10 this year.
• The Marauders will see three teams (East Stroudsburg, West Chester and Kuztown) that played today at the PSAC Championships in a few weeks.
UP NEXT
• The Marauders return to the links at the Revolutionary Golf Classic hosted by Ursinus University on Saturday, Oct. 13.
