Millersville, Pennsylvania - The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's (PSAC) shot put record had stood for 32 years. Then came Millersville University sophomore Sunflower Greene. The Marauder made history at home during Saturday's 35th annual Millersville Metrics, breaking her own school record, the Millersville Metrics record and establishing a new PSAC record with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 49-2 1/2.
The PSAC record had been held by Slippery Rock's Jayne Beatty since 1985. Greene's third attempt went four feet further than her previous career best and 2 3/4 past Beatty's long-standing mark. She first set the school record as a freshman in 2016. She is the first PSAC athlete this season to clear 46 feet.
The shot put wasn't Greene's only first-place finish Saturday. She also won the hammer with Millersville Metrics record and NCAA provisional qualify mark of 179-2. Greene capped her day by placing fourth in the discus.
Freshman Madison Martin threw a career-best mark of 132-6 to finish third in the discus and set a PR in the hammer at 144-0, placing fifth in the event. Javelin specialist Amanda Myers posted a season-best throw of 153-9 and placed second. She also took sixth in the hammer. Deja Loose improved her PSAC qualifying mark in the shot put at 38-7 1/2 and placed fourth in the hammer.
Clara Forney led the way for the Millersville runners, taking first place in the 100-meter dash with a PSAC Championships qualifying time of 12.55 despite the cold weather. Courtney Ingold took third in the event and also qualified for the PSAC Championships at 12.71.
Aniya Gibbs posted a PSAC qualifying time in the 400-meter dash, placing fourth in 1:00.65. A pair of Marauders provided points in the long jump. Brianna Doherty placed third (16-9 1/4) and Kay Liebl (16-7 1/4) took sixth.
Millersville placed second out of 20 teams, totaling 104 points. West Chester took first place with 155. Millersville travels to West Chester on April 7-8 for the Bill Butler Invitational.
