ABOUT THE MARAUDERS
• Millersville slipped from No. 6 to No. 12 in the Collegiate Baseball Division II Poll after splitting last weekend's series with Kutztown. The Marauders still lead the PSAC in victories with 16. But after going 20-0 at home in 2016 and 15-2 at home in 2015, the Marauders are just 3-3 at Cooper Park so far this season. Three of the Marauders' six losses have been by one run.
• The Marauders' offense has been slumping lately. They scored more than four runs just twice in the last nine games and were held to one run four times. Millersville is 6-6 when scoring five or fewer runs. Over the last nine games, Millersville is hitting just .242 as a team. Offensive stalwarts
Ben Snyder and
Mitch Stoltzfus are a combined 9-for-48 (.188) in that stretch. The lone bright spot in the lineup in the last nine games has been the hitting of
David Summerfield, who has gone 11-for-26 (.423) with a .500 on base percentage.
• While the lineup has struggled to produce runs, the pitching staff has limited opponents to a .175 batting average and .261 on base percentage in the same nine games.
David Manasek has not allowed an earned run in his last three starts. He has totaled 21 innings with two complete games, a 2-0 record, 22 strikeouts and just three walks and eight hits allowed.
Eli Nabholz won his second PSAC East Pitcher of the Week award and his first NCBWA Atlantic Region honor after his most recent start. He tossed eight shutout innings against Kutztown while matching a career high with 12 strikeouts. Nabholz leads the PSAC in innings pitched, strikeouts and strikeouts looking.
• Millersville had been a roll on the base paths prior to last weekend's Kutztown series. Millersville recorded a stolen base in nine consecutive games, totaling 24 steals to just one caught stealing in that span. The Marauders, however, managed just three steals in the Kutztown series including zero steals in the two losses. Millersville is 15-3 when it steals at least one base and 1-3 when it fails to steal a base. The Marauders are 35-for-42 stealing bases (2.2 steals per game) in the team's wins but 5-for-7 (0.83 steals per game) in the losses.
SERIES HISTORY
• Millersville has swept Mansfield in each of the last three seasons, giving the Marauders 12 consecutive victories over the Mountaineers. Since 2011, the Marauders are 20-4 against Mansfield. The last time Mansfield won a season series against Millersville was in 2010, when it took three of four. Mansfield's last win at Cooper Park came by a 9-5 score in the opening game of the 2013 season.
• Millersville outscored Mansfield 30-7 in last season's series sweep, totaling 45 hits to Mansfield's 17. Summerfield went 9-for-13 in the series.
Cordell Shannon tossed a complete game in his start, allowing three hits while striking out five.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
• Mansfield has won three of four, taking games two and three of the PSAC East series with Lock Haven and beating Penn College 8-4 on Wednesday. The Mountaineers are 7-1 when scoring at least five runs. Three pitchers--Luke Hils, Evan McAndrew and Tanner Klein--have started five games each. McAndrew is 3-1 and leads the team in wins, but Hils' 4.50 ERA and 28 innings pitched are best of the trio. Tyler Guidos is the top reliever, tallying a 2.12 ERA, 2-0 record and three saves in seven appearances totaling 17 innings pitched.
• Peter Pena is a dangerous hitter. He leads the team in average (.397), hits (25), doubles (6), home runs (3), RBIs (20), and on base percentage (.443). Taylor Hillson is a four-year starter and a former All-PSAC East selection. He hit .372 last season, and is hitting .299 in 2017.
