Millersville, Pennsylvania – Millersville pushed No. 13 Pitt-Johnstown to the brink Friday night. The Marauders gave their PSAC opponent a scare at Pucillo Gymnasium, leading the entire match until the final showdown, as the Mountain Cats were able to come from behind to win, 21-18.
Colton Dull nearly gave the Marauders the win in his match against Nico Pecora at 197 pounds. UPJ's Pecora was able to defeat Dull in a sudden victory round, 4-2. Dull led 2-1 in the third, but was charged with a stall, resulting in one point for Pecora. With time winding down, Dull drove Pecora to the mat, but was unable to complete the takedown before the period expired. Pecora scored an early takedown in the one-minute sudden victory period. Pecora's victory cut Millersville's lead to 18-16. Damon Sims went on the win the final match of the day by tech fall, giving the Mountain Cats their only lead of the day.
133-pound
Aaron Wildonger had one of the most remarkable wins of the night for Millersville. After a rocky start, Wildonger pinned Joe Davis in merely 48 seconds, putting Millersville up 12-0 at the time. Davis took early control, but Wildonger quickly reversed his positioning and seemingly out of nowhere was able to pin his opponent while he remained standing, pressing his opponent's shoulders into the ground and sealing the win.
At 157 pounds,
Seth Decker picked up a pivotal three points on a win by decision for Millersville. Tied 1-1 in the third, Decker scored an impressive take-down to earn two points with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third period. Decker lifted his challenger, Boe Bonzo, before forcefully slamming him into the ground. Â Bonzo etched out one point in the closing seconds, but it was not enough and Decker escaped with a 3-2 win by decision in what was one of the most exhilarating matchups of the night.
Shane Ruhnke scored another dramatic win by decision for the Marauders in the 165 weight class, taking down Steve Edwards, 7-6. Ruhnke scored two points to go up 6-4 with 38 seconds remaining in the match, but Edwards countered right back in the final seconds to tie the match at six. However, due to riding time, Ruhnke was awarded one point, just enough to sneak out another win for the Marauders.
In the 125 weight class,
Connor Sheehan started things off with a win by forfeit, setting the tone for what would be an impressive performance for the 2-6 Marauders against a top-25 ranked Pitt Johnstown team. Â
Millersville's next contest is tomorrow at 9 a.m., as the Marauders will be participating in the Messiah Open.
