IDENTIFYING STRENGTHS AND AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT AFTER OPENING WEEKEND
• Millersville opened their season 1-1 while hosting the Conference Challenge at Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders defeated UVA-Wise 56-47 after senior Alayah Hall shot perfect (8-8) from the free throw line in the remaining 76 seconds of the game. Freshman guard
Lauren Lister, who scored double digits in her first Millersville game, also recorded a steal and subsequent fast break lay up to help ice the game for the Marauders.
• Millersville were the victims of a perfect storm when they faced No. 2 Virginia Union. The nationally ranked Panthers were alert and on the war path after losing to Edinboro by double digits in Millersville, Pa. the previous night. VUU was aggressive from the opening tip-off with their full-court press, and a shellshocked Millersville walked into the locker room at halftime down 51-13. The Marauders turned it around in the third quarter and outscored the Panthers 23-16. However, already holding an insurmountable lead, the Panthers locked down on defense and held the Marauders to seven points in the fourth quarter and walked off the court with a 87-43 victory.
• Coach Fleig identified the match up against No. 2 VUU as a measuring stick game in the preseason. After playing a mostly half court game against UVA-Wise, Millersville was attacked in the full court almost the entirety of their game against VUU. The Marauders had difficulty responding to a tenacious full-court press for three quarters, but the young Marauders now have experience playing against a full-court defense for 40 straight minutes.
• During their two matches in the Conference Challenge, Coach Fleig's squad saw freshmen step up. The aforementioned Lister scored 12 points on 50 percent shooting in her first collegiate game against UVA-Wise. She made contributions in every facet of the game as she snagged three rebounds, assisted three buckets, and stole the ball three times.
Olivia Mottern's first 17 career minutes came against VUU as the guard scored nine points, snagged six rebounds, and shot a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Forward
Catherine Copeland averaged 24.5 minutes over the weekend along with 5.5 points per game on 63 percent shooting, 3.5 rebounds per game, and 1.5 steals per game.
• Millersville veterans Hall, redshirt junior
Kendra Bamberger, and junior
Jade Farquhar enjoyed strong individual performances during the Conference Challenge. Hall scored 18 points against UVA-Wise while snagging five rebounds and recording three steals. Bamberger nearly registered a double-double in both performances as she averaged 8.5 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game. Farquhar averaged eight points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING SCOTS
• Edinboro was picked third in the Western Division in the PSAC preseason poll after the Fighting Scots fell to conference runner-up California in the 2016-17 PSAC Playoffs.
• The Fighting Scots are winners of three straight after opening their season with a 10 point victory over No. 2 Virginia Union and a 12 point victory over UVA-Wise at the Conference Challenge hosted by Millersville. Edinboro continued to bolster their out-of-conference record with a 10 point home victory over Wheeling Jesuit Wednesday.
• Edinboro are lead by senior forward Ciara Rosten who won PSAC Western Division Co-Athlete of the Week Monday and redshirt junior Jontay Walton. Rosten scored 20 points and snagged 15 rebounds to earn a double-double against No. 2 Virginia Union. Rosten currently averages 16.7 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game. Walton leads the team in scoring with 21 points per game while shooting 47 percent from the field and almost 43 percent from the three point line. Edinboro has two more players averaging in double figures, Michaela Barnes and Michelle Jahn.
THE LAST MEETING (Edinboro 63, Millersville 49)
• Edinboro earned a 14 point victory after forcing 22 Millersville turnovers and scoring 18 points off turnovers. The Marauders found themselves down 33-19 entering halftime and could not swing momentum back in their favor.
• Alayah Hall lead the team in scoring with 15 points on 50 percent shooting. Hall also snagged four rebounds and assisted two more buckets.
Courtney Dimoff scored nine points while shooting 3-4 from the three point line. Dimoff made 60 percent of Millersville's three pointers against Edinboro.
SCOUTING THE LAKERS
• Mercyhurst was picked ninth in the Western Division in the PSAC preseason poll. The Lakers began their season with two difficult out-of-conference match ups and were one possession away from splitting their games in the PSAC vs. MEC Challenge, but instead the Lakers currently sport an 0-2 record.
• Millersville will need to lock down Mercyhurst's two leading scorers Maria Lapertosa and Amber Renz. Lapertosa averages 20 points per game on 48 percent shooting and 46 percent shooting from the three point line while also averaging 7.5 rebounds per game and three assists per game. Renz sits right behind Lapertosa with 19.5 points per game on almost 62 percent shooting and a perfect three point shooting percentage. Along with her scoring, Renz averages eight rebounds and two assists per game. If Millersville, can slow down these two players, Mercyhurst's next leading scorer averages four points per game.
THE LAST MEETING (Mercyhurst 60, Millersville 49)
• The teams played a hotly contested first half and fourth quarter. In those three quarters, Mercyhurst lead Millersville 39-38. The difference came in the third quarter when the Lakers went on a 21-11 run to open the second half. Lapertosa finished second on Mercyhurst in scoring with 16 points.
• Courtney Hinnant earned a double-double and lead the Marauders with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Aunjel Ban Brakle finished second on Millersville in scoring with 13 points.
