• Millersville heads into Homecoming Saturday after posting its first shutout since 2012. After three narrow losses, the Marauders topped East Stroudsburg 12-0 behind a rejuvenated rushing attack and a stout defense. Millersville rushed for 249 yards--its highest total since the 2014 season opener, and Tyrone Gibson's career-high 183 yards were the most by a Marauder back since 2014. • Both of Millersville's wins have come on the road, but Saturday marks just the third home game for the Marauders and four of the final five games of the season are at home, including each of the last three.
• Expect a close game on Saturday. Since 2010, neither team has won by more than 14 points in the six games. In 2015 at Millersville, Lock Haven scored the game-winning touchdown off a deflected pass with two seconds remaining. In 2014, Lock Haven scored a 17-10 win on a touchdown with just over five minutes to play. In 2011, Millersville's Brian Knell intercepted a pass with under one minute remaining to preserve a 21-20 victory for the Marauders.
• Five of Millersville's six games have been decided by two scores or fewer. The Marauders two wins have been by a combined 19 points while three of the four losses have been by an average of 10 points.
• In 2016, Lock Haven went 4-7 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC East for its most wins since 2002 and its most divisional wins since 1979. The club also set program records points, total offense and passing yards. But Lock Haven is 1-5 entering Saturday's game, and aside from a 62-point outburst last week against Cheyney, Lock Haven scored a total of 33 points in its previous five games. But Lock Haven's schedule has been among the most difficult in the conference to date. The season opened against Division I Saint Francis and Lock Haven has since faced nationally-ranked and undefeated Slippery Rock and 5-1 West Chester and Shippensburg. Lock Haven's six opponents have a combined record of 22-7, and Edinboro owns three of those losses.
• Since records started being kept in 1968, Milleresville is 22-23-1 in Homecoming games but have lost four in a row and nine of the last 11. Lock Haven has served as the Homecoming opponent twice (2013 and 2015) and won both of those. Millersville's last Homecoming victory came in 2012.
SCOUTING BY THE NUMBERS
• Both starting quarterbacks have the ability to run, and Lock Haven's Kyle Knight put that on display against Cheyney last week, rushing 20 times for 181 yards and four touchdowns on his way to being named the PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Week. Knight has just 11 completions and 26 attempts in four games played, but he's rushed for 330 yards and has totaled more than 100 yards rushing twice. He's averages 15.5 carries per game.
• Knight was last week's starter but Cameron Tobias and Jimmy Strickland have also taken significant snaps. Tobias started the first two games but has thrown eight interceptions. Strickland played extensively in weeks three, four and five, completing 47.0 percent of his passes. A year after setting the school record for passing yards, Lock Haven has passed for more than 200 yards in a game just twice, instead turning its attention toward the run in recent weeks. Lock Haven has attempted more runs than passes in all six games. And last week against Cheyney, Lock Haven rushed 58 times for 460 yards while attempting just seven passes. Knight is the team's leading rusher.
• Millersville has also looked to its quarterback for production in the run game. Millersville's three quarterbacks have combined for six of the team's nine rushing touchdowns. Stephen Flanagan is likely slated to start his third game of the season. He has rushed 43 times for 102 yards in his three appearances.
• Tyrone Gibson has provided quite a spark for the Millersville run game. After totaling eight carries for 46 yards in his first three games, Gibson has rushed 40 times in the last three, totaling 247 yards (6.2 ypc). In just 16 rushes in 2016, Gibson averaged 5.3 yards per carry. He can make a big play too. His 59-yard rush last week was the longest by a Marauder since 2014. He also caught a 59-yard pass last season.
• After posting a shutout against East Stroudsburg, Millersville's defense climbed to fifth in the PSAC total defense and continue to rank second in the league against the pass, allowing just 201.3 yards per game. The Marauders also rank fourth in opponent first downs, holding teams to 18.7 per game
THE LAST MEETING (LHU 29, Millersville 17, 10/15/16)
• Millersville raced to a 10-0 lead at Lock Haven. But Lock Haven's Nysir Minney-Gratz changed the course of the game with a 98-yard kick return. From there, the Bald Eagles outscored the Marauders by 26 points for a 29-17 final.
• Millersville held Lock Haven without an offensive touchdown in the first half and led 10-9 at the break. Lock Haven out-gained Millersville 381-110 over the final three quarters including a fourth quarter in which Lock Haven held a 158-23 advantage in total yards and rushed for 105 while taking and preserving the lead.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• Lock Haven has won four consecutive games in the series, but all four have been closely contested. The widest margin of victory is 12 points and the average margin is 9.8 during Lock Haven's four-game winning streak. The teams first played in 1928 and Lock Haven went 16-3-1 against Millersville until 1959. The two programs did not play again for 37 years. Millersville then won six in a row from 1996-2011.
• Millersville's last victory in the series came by a 21-20 score at Lock Haven in 2011. The Marauders' 35-21 win in 2010 was its last home victory in the series. Lock Haven has won its last two games at Biemesderfer Stadium (26-14 in 2013 and 36-28 in 2015).
QB PRESSURE
• One game after recording a season-high in sacks against Bloomsburg, the Marauders dialed up the pass rush and totaled a season-high five sacks against East Stroudsburg. Millersville has 11 sacks in the last games, which is exactly the same number the Marauders produced in 11 games in 2016. The last time Millersville totaled at least five sacks in a game came in the 2015 season opener.
• Tommy Halloway and Sean Dugan own 7 1/2 of the team's 11 sacks, and Halloway is the team leader with 4 1/2. After coming up empty in his first two games, Halloway has recorded at least one sack in three of the last four games.
TAKE IT AWAY
• After not forcing a turnover at Pace, the Millersville defense has generated 12 takeaways in the last five weeks. Millersville picked off Seton Hill three times in week two, recorded two INTs and two fumbles forced and recovered against California, forced and recovered a fumble against Kutztown, forced and recovered two fumbles against Bloomsburg, and intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble against East Stroudsburg. Millersville has successfully recovered each of the last five fumbles it has forced and has six fumble recoveries in the last four weeks. Kendle Pitts' interception against ESU was the first of his career and Millersville's first since week three.
• Brendan Sherman's interception return for touchdown against Seton Hill was his first career INT and first career touchdown. All six of Millersville's interceptions have been made by different players.
MINIMIZE THE MISCUES
• After committing nine turnovers in the first three games, Millersville has gone three games with just two turnovers total and did not commit a turnover against Kutztown. Since 2013, Millersville is 7-11 when not throwing an interception. In that span, Millersville has won only one game in which it did not throw an interception.
Millersville is even in turnover margin through six games but is plus-two over the last three games.
BREAKING IT UP
• Millersville has broken up 20 passes in six games and has 23 passes defended. The team broke up seven passes against Kutztown. Brendan Sherman recorded three of those break ups himself. It has been a full team effort with 12 different players defending a pass.
DUGAN ON DEFENSE
• Dugan opened his 2017 season right where he left off in 2016, totaling 10 tackles against Pace and following that effort with a career-high 21 tackles against Seton Hill. In his last 16 games, Dugan has recorded double-digit tackles nine times. Dugan has also recorded at least one TFL in nine of the last 11 games, and he has 33 TFL in his last 31 games played.
• Dugan now ranks 15th in Division II and first in the PSAC in tackles with 64, and he has at least eight tackles in five of six games this season.
• With 160 career solo tackles, Dugan ranks seventh in Millersville history.
• Dugan was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week following the Seton Hill game. It was the second time in his career he won the award. Both awards came after playing Seton Hill.
• In 2016, Dugan's 19 tackles against Seton Hill were the most tackles by a Marauder in the Statcrew Era dating back to 2002. He topped that mark with 21 in week two of 2017.
• Dugan's 111 tackles were the most by a Marauder since 1999 and his 69 solo tackles were the most since 1996.
WIGGINS WATCH
• Kevin Wiggins has caught a pass in 38 consecutive games dating back to the start of his freshman season. Now with 168 career grabs in 38 games, Wiggins moved into third place in career receptions, fifth in touchdowns (21) and fifth in career yards (2,077). He is one of just six Marauders to ever eclipse the 2,000-yard mark. He is two touchdown catches shy of Kevin Gannon for fourth and eight shy of Sean Scott's school record.
• With 35 catches, Wiggins is seventh in the PSAC in receptions. If he maintains his current pace of 5.8 catches per game, he will finish the season with 64 catches which would rank fifth all-time in a single season and would put him close to becoming the third Millersville player ever to reach 200 career catches.
• Wiggins was named All-PSAC East Second Team in 2016, becoming Millersville's first all-conference wide receiver since Jamal Smith in 2010.
• Wiggins is the first Marauder since hall of famer Mike McFetridge (1996-98) to lead the team in receiving in three consecutive seasons and one of only two players ever to record 40-plus catches in each of his first three seasons.
• Wiggins has ranked in the top 25 in the PSAC in catches each of his three seasons.
RELIABILITY
• Since making his debut in week one of the 2014 season, Drew Seaburg has started 39 consecutive games on the defensive line. Only eight players in the PSAC entered 2017 with 30 career starts, and only Slippery Rock's Marcus Martin has more (43) career starts than Seaburg. Kevin Wiggins, with 38 career starts, is tied for fourth with West Chester's Vince Lostracco. Wiggins and IUP's Jay Watkins (CB) are the only non-lineman with 30 or more starts.
EXPERIENCE UP FRONT
• There is no shortage of game experience for the Marauders on the defensive line. Among returning players listed on the depth chart, Logan Kinser (39), Drew Seaburg (39), Tanner Dean (38), Morgan Faughnan (28) and Tommy Halloway (17) have combined for 161 games played.
