GAME OVERVIEW
• For the seventh year in a row, Millersville has opened up the season with a victory. The Marauders toppled Newberry 5-0 on Saturday led by a hat trick effort by
Aliza Mizak. Millersville heads to Massachusetts to take on Stonehill (0-1) on Monday for an afternoon Labor Day matchup.
• Seniors
Margaret Thorwart and
Arianna Grays each added an assist in the first game of the year. Grays and Thorwart are two of eight seniors on a team poised to make a deep run in 2016. The seniors aren't the only ones helping out this squad, in addition to sophomore Mizak's three goals,
Kathleen Bishop, a junior, added two goals in the victory.
• Mizak's three goals were a career high. She set the Millersville freshman scoring record and led the team in scoring with 10 in 2015.Â
• Stonehill is coming off of its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance and Millersville has made three in a row. Both teams have built reputations as perennial contenders. "I take great pride that we are recognized the way we are," said head coach
Shelly Behrens, "I'm proud of our program and I think it's awesome we're known like that. We just try to be a bit better than we were the game before."
SERIES HISTORY
• Monday will be the first meeting of these two schools in field hockey. Stonehill has an impressive 49-14 combined record over the past three seasons, but has not fared well against PSAC opponents, losing to both East Stroudsburg and West Chester in 2015 and ESU again on Saturday. After a run to the national semifinal in both 2014 and 2015, the Skyhawks, led by second-year Coach Susan Ciufo, have clearly solidified their spot as one of the top teams in Division II.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
• Stonehill opened its season in a matchup against last year's national champions, East Stroudsburg. After a tough 2-1 loss, in which it gave up an early lead, Stonehill goes from playing the No. 1 team to the No. 2 team in Millersville. The Skyhawks are ranked fifth in the country, and the matchup against Millersville will be their home opener.
